Just out of interest?

I broke my radius last week. A stupid non event, which set off a pathological fracture due to a prevously unidentified cyst/tumour (benign) in the bone. It's in cast at the moment, but hopefully in a couple of weeks i'll get a shorter below the elbow one. investigations will be ongoing to deal with the gammy bit.

Obviously i'm now out for burgie & area, but hows about a gentle stroll on a safe sensible b?

Anybody?

yes, depending on which side.. mine was the right arm, it was mounting that was the main issue, i just used a block, and put left hand on back of saddle and hopped!

and then generally used one hand.

if its a new break id give it a couple of weeks healing time before riding, as if you do use it it is possible to give yourself further problems.
oh and cover your hand area.. the bit between my thumb and finger was really dirty and i had to come clean at the hospital id been riding.. cue much tutting and lecturing..

yup i did - fractured my wrist when i was younger

i think i went a week or two without riding but then got bored

i didn't jump but i carried on doing mounted games (luckily it was my left arm so i could still use my right to help me vault on) i had my cast on when we competed at the Royal Highland too and not one person said anything to me about it

Noodlejaffa - i'm gutted about Burgie. glad i hadn't actually entered though.
A little more gutted at missing area 22 dressage & sj, which i had entered and booked stabling!

Otherhalf broke his shoulder (subluxed A-C) joint so his arm effectively fell off the end of his shoulder... He was told not to ride for 6 weeks until they decided whether to operate or not but he was back on in 10 days. Had to ride my horse as he neck-reins but it was getting on and off that was the problem. Surprising how much you rely on your arms for balance when getting on or off.

I would be careful though - not just for your own H&S but because you may find your insurance is void if you have an accident or cause an accident whilst riding with a known injury.

TUT! What is it with horsey people*? You have a broken bone, don't ride for goodness sake! I broke my radius a couple of years ago and it seriously hurt and you need to keep it still for a good while. Don't risk the healing process. Please be careful and hope you recover quickly.

*I'm just as bad as you lot, whenever I got injured as a kid/teenager I only ever went to a doctor who had horses on our yard as she would give me times of healing in regards to how soon I could get back on and ride again rather than when the injury would be fully healed.

Id say you could but be careful. Give it a few weeks to heal then maybe try just walking round in the school or going on a hack with someone walking next to you, then if necessary they can hold the horse for you, or even leading on a rope. I would also say check your insurance. Hope you get better soon.

I would like wise give it some time.

A friend broke her arm and started riding again 2 weeks before cast came off. Horse bucked her off and she broke her other arm!! Needless to say I ended up with the horse for 2 months second time round.

Sounds painful and I hope you get it sorted ok. :)

yes I rode with my broken arm... not the first week or so but after that i did.... rode on it for 2 days before i gave in and went to hospital to find it was infact broken.

rode with badly broken noes when I was told not to till i had it put straight.

rode when i had both kids.... Beatle had her first fall when i was 4 months preg!!! only stop riding in the last few weeks before..... rode day after came out of hospital with Beatle with 17 stitches...... only just made it to hospital with Harry cus I was to laid back never got to the delivery room

rode with broken coccyx but that still hurts now if i sit on hard seats for a long time

rode with a broken foot

OH put back my dislocated toe.... which hurt lots, he did not tell me he was putting it back.... nice of him not to tell me he was doing it... said he was not wasting time at A and E

jumped at Burghley Horse Trials in PC SJ when I was on crutches for badly pull ligaments in my knee.... not a good move made it much worst

fell and bend my engagement ring 2 days before my wedding.... father in law was a goldsmith.... so he mended it day before wedding.....

So I dont think I count as a normal person really so think your best to rest your arm and wait to find out about the gammy bit before you put weight through it (oh I sound like a grown up now)

I have but wait a few weeks first. The nurse who first treated my break says its takes about 3 weeks for the bones to really start fusing, before then if you bash it too much you can shove the bones out of alignment (=possible op/longer healing time).

Getting on and off is most difficult! Make sure horse is a saint for those two parts and then you will be ok.

Yep! I broke my arm when I was about 12? and I was straight back on as soon as the plaster had dried! My mum wouldn't let me compete my young pony but let me take the loony tune mounted games pony to shows and we came joint 1st in a jumping class where they only noticed the broken arm when they gave my my rosette! To be honest I probably wouldnt compete with a broken arm these days but it certainly wouldn't stop me riding. I guess its a case of how badly is it broken and where?

ha ha, by the sounds of you lot, there's no reason why i shouldn't do area this weekend after all!

I will rest it properly(ish) for a couple of weeks first and I'll have continual xrays to assess healing due to the gammy bit, so I'll know when it's well on healing and not attempt anything more than a plod i promise.

I carried on riding with my arm in a full cast (hand to shoulder) and even did a bit of jumping. The only problem was the cast gave at the elbow so I could bend my arm! When I eventually went back to the hospital they said they had never seen that happen before and what had I been doing with it - needless to say I didn't own up!
This was many moons ago, I think I might be a bit more sensible now but then again I might not be!

Go for it ;)
Last year I fell off and snapped my clavicle clean in two (aren't I clever) at the very beginning of the summer holidays :( When they tond me I had to have eight weeks off I was pretty gutted... So decided to ignore them ;)
I went triple clear at the pony club Area Showjumping and managed to qualify for the Area Eventing Championships too within four weeks of falling off :D
However... I am now booked in to have it operated on in July as it actually hasnt healed itself :S How did that happen? Not sure if its related to riding too early or not, has anyone got any ideas? Now missing 2010 summer for good :S
So I'd say, give it a bit of time then do whatever you fancy :)

another one for riding with a broken leg! at the time i was at a different yard to my instructors so would hobble onto my pony and hack him 30mins up the road so my instructor could school, so not proper proper riding but kept me sane :D

I broke my left elbow falling off on the road (very lucky not to break both!) and went to try a horse with it in a cast... wasn't comfortable, and getting on/off hurt, but do-able. I only walked & trotted also, but Dan was very green, and very honest! :p Hence why he came home...

Yep, broke my hand just before RC jumping champs at Stoneleigh!! Had cast over hand and half way up arm. I cut a slit between thumb and first finger so the rein could slot in, pulled my jacket sleeve down, and put my gloves on!! We had a great day!! Cast was on for 4 months in total so I'm glad I still rode!!

I decided to dig out 6 months of deep litter 2 days after having my collar bone plated - needless to say I didn't get too far!

Arm in a cast should be ok providing you can hold the reins, you may need to soften and bend the cast near your fingers first ;).

what the break or the riding?! The break I fell down 40 stairs top to bottom, breaking my ankle and snapping all my ligaments. Riding - I mounted from a very tall block using my crutches and rode without stirrups. Pony (ex racer!) was very sensible and I wouldn't have done it on anything else

I'm another one that rode with a shattered ankle, I was back on 4 days after my op. despite promising the doctor that I wouldn't ride for 2months. Just rode without stirrups and got on from a block using crutches. I'm not sure what your insurance company would say if you had an accident though so perhaps take it fairly easy. Hope you feel better soon!

No. Never broken anything to try it. I did get on with a pretty bruised knee though? And by bruised I mean, still can't be fully bent 2 years on!

But it sounds like a challenge and I am SO trying when I break a bone!
