Hi
I have just taken in 4 days ago a 4/5 yr old unbroken TB x with an old injury to his neck which is still healing.

I have been informed by his previous keeper that it was from a reaction to an injection - but she doesnt know what. She kept him in due to weather and hasnt treated him. Nothing appears in his passport and we have no history from previous owners.

I have been cleaning with Hypocare and then applying Bio Oil. Will be getting some Megatek soon.
I have started him on a prooper balanced diet and is out 24/7 after his prolonged stretch of stable bound boredom.

It doesnt seem infected, and he lets me clean it although he is very nervous (has had minimal handling).

Just wondering if any one had seen anything similar or heard of such things happening?

Thanks

Can't see the picture, but if it was an injection there would be a record of vaccs in the passport or if it was some other medication, his previous vet would have a record of the prescription. Other possibility is that it was given without a vet's prescription to treat an infection,in which case the former owner should know what it was given for.

Just wonder (without seeing it) if it could be a sarcoid or mite infection ? Either way, if it is slow to heal, his immune system must be sluggish at the moment. might be worth having the vet check it out so you don't waste time and money treating the wrong thing.

Can see the first picture now, its quite bad, isn't it ? It could have been due to an allergic reaction from an injection or the formation of an abscess following the jab.

I'm actually quite shocked that he didn't receive any treatment for this when it happened, the poor boy must have felt very poorly and uncomfortable. Do get it looked at though, particularly as he is new to you and your yard.

I had a couple of horses that had something that looked very similar to this.. It came up on their necks, but not quite as large as this, and to me when I saw it, it looked like they had been sprayed with creosote.... V strange.. I called the vets and they took swabs and scrapings and the results came back as a type of rain scald... I would definitely get a vet to look at it..

Many thanks for your replies.

Checked again tonight. I don't think it's infected but we have the vet coming on fri just to check him over.

Poor man ;(

I had a vet out earlier this year to extract wolf teeth, he had with him an apprentice vet, I saw him telling her never to ever inject a horse in this area of the neck, because if it becomes infected the horse has issues putting his head down to eat because of pain and he has seen them die of starvation as a result. Start feeding your horse from head height and get a decent vet on the case. Shocking that a vet could inject that area and risk a horse. if you need to PM me and I can give you my vets details I know how passionately he feels about this and he would advise on the best cause of action. I reckon if he saw a vet doing that he would lamp them!

Hi Ester yes I shall keep you informed :)

Queenbe. Very interesting point. Thank you. However I have had him just under a week and he can comfortably eat from floor as he is turned out and doesn't seem to be bothered by grazing or eating from his bucket or piles of hay.

I'm not overly concerned about it now as it seems to be healing well. But goodness knows how long he had to suffer up until this point ;( poor soul.

I am very interested to find out the cause but I doubt I ever will find out what really happened. Xxxx

Any one wanting an update will be private messaged ;) x but briefly .....had the vet out today. Thinks looking ok. Meds for a week and review :)

The vet is treating as a chemical burn. As we don't now for sure what happened and there is no sign of initial ulceration or blistering area.

Fingers crossed it will clear up. Not sure of hair re growth tho.
