Any one used solar panels to power arena lights?

As title really, I've been looking at alternatives to the generator and noticed that you can get caravan solar panels that can power all the lights and appliances and wondered whether anyone had used one on their arena?

I think we have just had some installed, well there's some on the roof of the yard so I assume that's what they're doing but I'm afraid I can't be much help as I don't know anything about them. But you can definitely do it.

I'm not sure it would work - I think you would need a lot of lights to make it bright enough to see. To get the brightness would mean lots of panels to charge up lots of batteries... And you would probably still have to take the batteries home to charge them up from time to time esp in winter.

I love my solar stable lights, they have been absolutely fantastic, I'm just not sure it would work so well in an arena. My husband spent ages working out the specs, and I am pleased with the result - plenty bright enough, pretty much as good as regular electric, but that's 2 lights per 10x12 stable, not a 20 x 40 arena...

I think you might be better sticking with the generator

Not quite, but it is possible with the right bulbs.

We have arena floodlights which are 240v LED and therefore draw less than standard floodlights for the same light output. We use an inverter and leisure battery to power them, so yes the leisure battery could be recharged via a solar panel but we managed for the last two winters by bringing the battery home to recharge once every 6 weeks or so. The only caveat I had was that the inverter is so small and attractive to thieves that I would take it home every night. So we ran all the cables permanently into a weatherproof box and just clipped up the inverter to run between the lights and the battery whenever needed.
