any other dog owners hve this problem?

my dog loves to eat whatever he can find on the yard. poo, dropped bits of carrot, hooves when the farrier is there and left over food. there is a muddy patch where one of the owners always feeds their horse, and i think the left over food must rot. my dog always makes a bee line for it and it makes his breath absolutely stink! its not like it in summer, only since its been so wet. other than muzzling him, cant really stop him and its impossible to pick up all the bits of food. anyone else's dog suffer with bad breath?!

i have a 7 months old jack russel who had hurrendoes breath when her teeth were falling out! she ate aload of hoof yesterday and puked it up all over my bed at 2am! not nice! shes not aloud to eat any more hoof!

I'd do a lot of training with him so that when you say 'no' or 'here' or a given command, he stays away from whatever he is attracted to.

So make him believe that you are the most exciting thing in the world - all food comes from you, all toys come from you. In the beginning you could spend time with him on a lunge line or long line, when he heads for the muddy patch, call him, make it very fun and light hearted, if he responds, brilliant, give him something totally yummy like chicken and cheese or hot dog sausage.

If he ignores you, you stand on or keep a firm hold of the line so he can go no further. So he either comes to you and you praise and reward him, or you physically bring him back to you and praise and reward - so being with you equals treats and fun, ignoring you results in bugger all.

So eventually you see him wander over to nasty things, you say 'no!' or 'ah-ah' or 'stop' to get his attention and let him know it is verboten

then 'here!' or 'come!' and when he does, good boy!

My dogs favourite passtime at the yard is to find a stone then take it in the dung heap and play for ages in there burrying it then scuffing round digging it back out, then back in then back out - you get the picture, if I shout at him to get out he clears off over the other side of the farm into the other dung heap so still stinks when he gets home - then insists on sleeping on my bed smelling like shi* lol, he also eats hoofs, leftover food, straw and anything else he can get his gnashers round.

easy solution if your dog has bad breathe is to buy the pedigree dental sticks. I buy mine from the local feed merchant so get them in a box and not a packet (as Sainsburys sell them) and no more bad breathe... my staffie girl had horrible breath and it was so bad the vet recommended brushing her teeth. An advantage of no2 staffie boy arriving was that it meant she would actually eat the dentals chews rather than let him have them!
