Mine is a 1/4 Shire 3/4 TB - she's a Nijinski grand daughter of all things!

She's evented to Novice, done all PC teams, done all RC teams recently with a junior rider, previously with a senior rider, is an absolute petal to have around. She took a long time to settle in as she had a bad injury after we'd had her less than two weeks and she had to be box rested for 7 months. She loathes being stabled so it was a terrible time for her in a new home.

She's now recovered and although she's not boisterously affectionate she is pleased to see us, and comes over to demand cuddles. As she has taken a while to come out of her shell we always feel especially honoured when she shows us affection. Although she's the biggest animal in our group she is not top dog, and is rather towards the bottom of the pile.

She's the easiest girl in the world to compete with. Loads and unloads like a dream and just doesn't hot up at competitions. She is a bit naughty that if you disappear inside the lorry and leave her outside she will untie herself and go visiting, nothing nasty, she just wanders round and says hello, especially to picnickers.

She is not the best put together girl in the world but her attitude and ability and superb temperament make her an absolute delight to own.

I have the most prettiest tbXshire mare has the manners of a saint, trustworthy, bombproof, jumps like a stag.. When she wants too!

She is pretty close to perfect for me and I wouldn't trade her for the world!

Enjoy your journey with your new found love ;)

OK Not an owner of one, but thought I'd tell you about the two at our yard!

First one is 19 years old, hunt masters horse, shire x tb, managed a life in the hunt field and is getting ready for this coming season at 19!! Although he will only be doing a few I believe as the owners have gone and bought a replica of him!! Another shire x tb mare, they are like 2 peas in a pod!! I rode this mare for the first time the other day, out in the stubble fields with the other hunters!!! She was soo good, no nonsense, no faffing, such a comfortable canter you could ride it all day!!! OK the canter's not going to win any dressage comps! Not round or elevated, but just what you want out in the field!!

I have a 2 year old Shire x TB and he's wonderful. His dad is a 17.2hh dapple grey shire who has won many shire classes and is a registered shire stallion with the shire horse society and his mum is a 16.1hh bay TB who used to jump 1.30 classes so i'm hoping some of his mums tallent combined with his dads power will make him a fantatsic showjumper?!!?

I can't wait for him to grow up so we can do even more together but I'm also enjoying him being a baby :D

Me too!
My boy is shire x tb x id. Mum was half shire half tb, dad 3/4 id 1/4 tb. Mty boy is very talented but also vey spooky. We think a lot of it is due to him not doing enough but its not easy to get going as hes just so irrational. Love him to bits though and hope to get going once I sort some transport out.

Although mine is out on loan technically I still own him lol. He is a WB x shire half and half. He is 18.1. He is just too sharp for me, learns very quickly, fantastic on the ground, brilliant with other animals and kids but too quick for me to ride. Lady who has him is totally in love and rides him beautifully.
I hope you have a great time with your new boy and cant wait to see some pictures.

Interesting. I am about to become the owner of one. Only 16.3 but built like a tank. Stealth horse tho cos when you get on him he seems to lengthen and will dressage to intermediate and has gone round Stockton Lovell intermediate course.
I look forward to being laughed at before the dressage and ODE competitions

RSL. He is lovely looking chappy,

I had a lovely TBXShire foal who I sold as a 4yo nearly 10 years ago. He has always been the one I regret selling and really wish I had held onto him

Although he is happy hunting around the country these days.

Super crosses imo and wouldn't hesitate to have another

I have a 16.3hh, just gone 4yo, ShireXHackney. He's so lovely but a bit of a baby so not doing anything exciting at the moment, just local dressage, schooling and hacks :D
He is not what I expected from a shire at all, he's very responsive, full of energy (but always safe) and has lovely paces. He's very friendly aswell :D and completely obsessed with food
I'd love to get him xc-ing and mebbies endurance rides, hopefully. I'd tried him over a few jumps and he's never refused anything :)

Photos huh? Photos it is :) This is the first horse I ever rode and I had him on loan for 6 months... 16.3 if I remember. Shire X TB.

He's called Soldier, would be about 17 now and he's somewhere maybe south yorkshire way? My apologies to Soldier for such a terrible riding position but it was only my second or third time on a horse... ever. He was a 750KG teddy bear. Oh and he would do ANYTHING for a banana :)

I love my Sleeps TB but I really do miss Soldier. We really did click almost instantly.

Ignore the lard a*se on top (I've lost 2 stone since then!!!) but this is my shire x something!! He's fantastic, does everything and more!! Together we've been learning to jump and do XC because he absolutely loves it, he's handicapped by his 41 year old owner who's only started jumping last year but we're doing okay!!! He's blind in his left eye but you wouldn't know it (well you do cos he spooks like nothing I've ever seen but we can live with that!!). He's my perfect dream horse and I am grateful everyday for him.

My friend has a Shire x TB, she bought her nearly 6 years ago, she'd been started in dressage. When my friend emigrated to the US, her horse went with her as she has fallen so in love with her (she'd meant to sell the mare prior to leaving but couldn't bear to part with her).

Well, to say in the 2.5 years she's been in the US she's come into her own is an understatement. The bond my friend and her mare has deepened to the point that my friends trainer (GP rider) cannot get the mare to go for her as well as my friend does, the trainer is convinced the mare will get to GP level in dressage as in the short time shes been in the US she now does flying changes, piaffe, tempi's and much more... she's 12. My friend has had so many offers from Americans to buy her horse, one wants to event her as she can also jump. She hacks around the barn complex (its a HUGE complex - has 300 stables for use in competitions) with not a bother, in fact she nursemaids most of the other horses out to the competition rings as the silly US dressage diva's dont "do" outside so they can't get out to ride unaccompanied when a busy show is on. The mare is a paragon of virtue and when she was here and we boxed her to competitions she was an angel, in fact you wouldn't know she was there ! Her paces have took a while to start to show, but they are getting there. So yes, as an owner of a cob with a healthy amount of shire in her and as a friend to an owner of a shire x TB I would say I am most definitely a fan :D I am visiting them in the US at the end of the month so hope to get a few pictures I can post (with her "mums" permission of course :) )

I can't believe how popular they are :)

I have a 16.1hh shire cross. Her mum was dutch warmblood and the father was half TB, Half Shire. She has a great personality, but is very spooky.

She is a dude, but very hairy! Literally anyone can ride her, but is still fun. Loves jumping bless her. But her brain into a TB's body and you have the best event horse ever!

Thankyou for all your replies, it's amazing how many people own them. Went up to check them this morning and all was ok. B was in his field and my friends 36yr old was in hers. I brought him in for a couple of minutes and he was a bit stressy away from her but only calling out to her and not standing still but no worse than any other horse would be just bigger and stronger!! When I lead him back out I kept stopping and making him stand before walking on and he was a good boy. He was as good as gold to put back in field and waited while I shut gate and took his headcollar off.

I think he used to getting treats at the gate as he hung around for a bit before wandering off disappointed!! He's a bit fat and we're going to be very strict with him re food and not rugging him unless he desperately needs it. What do you feed yours on? I'm thinking of getting top spec lite feed balancer and just giving him that and grass ATM with hay in the winter when he comes in at night.

We are going to ride him tomorrow and lead the old girl out with him, I think it's a bit unfair to take him out straight away on his own in a area he doesn't know but I'll have him walking in the front. It's a bit scary getting to know a new horse again but we have alot of background history on him so hope he's as good as they say!!

After we've ridden tomorrow we're going to mix him with the old girl, we will be staying up to watch them so we can intervene if nec. They'll have to be separated at night though when they're fed as the old girl needs her extra feeds as she's a gummy girl now bless her.

I'm sure I'll have more reports but muffins for you all getting this far :) xx

This is our girl, back from life-threatening injury, teaching my daughter dressage; they'd just started with a flatwork instructor at that point.

DSCF2575.jpg

She'd not been back jumping long and we offered her to my daughter's friend to ride. Here she is, this is a nervous child who had only had a chance to jump the mare in the warm up arena and it was the first show we'd ever taken the mare to - we guessed she'd behave beautifully but she surpassed all our expectations. The grin on the kid's face at the end of the round had to be seen to be believed.

:D Thank you he's my pride and joy. He's surprisingly easy to keep, only gets a full bath twice a year and his mane and tail keep themselves really. Just quick brush and lots of spray and he's fine. It's keeping the white feathers that is the hard bit..esp as he's a mud monkey!! Lol!!
