Any preloved members - could you warn these people about giving away dogs?

Springtime, I don't think it is as easy as to just hand them over to a rescue.

Our Rottie girl was advertised for free on preloved for a good month before a chance phone call led her to our door. The previous owner had no luck in finding her a home via preloved and had contacted all the local rescues, all of which were full and who couldn't help. The old owner contacted the vet in desparation and asked them to pts. The vets refused because she was healthy. The poor woman was at her wits end, just about to move into a flat and didn't know what to do.

I don't know what the answer is, but there are lots of dogs advertised free to good home out there because their owners have no where else to turn.

Hope the dogs in the ads find loving homes very soon.

MrsElle - I know, it is terrible and rescues are full to bursting. Could they not just put a price on them? Surely if you really want a dog and can truely afford to afford it you wouldn't mind paying £50 or something (says the girl who is has just contacted a women in Fife about a 10 month old bitch asking £320 and I live in Quorn, Leics!)

I remember seeing the first add previously where they did try to charge for the dog,

its a shame if it had of been good with cats and small furries I'd of had it :-(

I know what you mean about putting a price on them, but some people are so desparate they will do anything to find a home.

Also, in the current climate more people are having to give up their dogs and fewer people are buying, particularly the larger breeds like our Elsie.

The rescues round here are full of large breeds and Staffies, the smaller dogs find it much easier to find new homes it would seem.

As I said, I don't know what the answer is, but it is a heartbreaking situation :(

the second one is so sad a story, unfortunately with the change in housing rules this year that will also affect me I can see an awful lot of dogs going to be up for rehoming for the same reason :(

You can advertise other places though, for instance your local vets (where you are sure to find a better audience) or rescue/rehoming websites where they will offer advice and try and help find foster/rescue space or allow you to post in their rehoming sections where home checks can be carried out, I advised the person I replied to of these methods rather than "free ads" sites where there is a possibility they end up as bait dogs or as puppy machines.

I actually noticed a very small notice on Preloved today asking people to not give animals, particularly dogs, away for free because of potential harm to the dog.

To be fair, we are about to take on two cats from preloved that are free. We would have to pay about £100 from a rescue, and money is pretty tight at the mo so we would have to wait. Yet to feed a couple of cats would be fine, and vets bills would go on credit cards if need be..

If I was rehoming an animal (never will be!) I would be visiting homes and wanting to hear from local vets etc. Charging a few quid doesn't change things for me.
