And if so do you take your pooches to the yard and ride out with it? I haven't taken Dave, my 11 month old pug up the yard yet although when I go check out horse share my boyfriend brings him along but keeps him on the lead. I just get so paranoid that he'll get stepped on by a horse or get kicked. He's not the brightest of dogs (he won't notice there's a dog in front of him until it's a feet away!) and genuinely has no fear of livestock. We walk past a herd of cows in a local park several times and he has never batted an eyelid at them. So I thought he wasn't too bothered by them and let him off the lead near them, (he's normally walked off lead) but sods law on this occasion he sees the cows, goes right up to them and starts asking them to play him! There were a few cow kicks aimed at him but thank god he wasn't hurt! At the moment I don't take him down the yard as I don't like the idea of not being able to keep an eye on him in case he poos on the yard and wanders into a stable with a horse. I also don't think I could ever hack out with him as he's such a clingy dog that he has to be right next to me all the time, (and preferably sitting on my lap/feet/head!) A neighbour takes her patterdale to the yard with her and apparently when she goes into the school, he'll sit on top of the mounting block and will not move the entire time she's riding until she dismounts and leaves the school! I don't think my dog will be quite as well behaved!

Pug owner here! We re-homed Prince last year. He's now six and is the gentlest, sweetest dog I've ever known. He wasn't exposed to a great deal in his previous home, however, so tends to let out one of those awful pug screams when he sees a horse. He's definitely getting better, though, and during the summer I managed to get him to sit quietly and watch a horse cantering in the arena. Now that I'm pregnant, no riding, so I fear we'll have to start all over with his training come winter. And I agree that pugs are not that smart. After having a Boston terrier for eight years (whip-smart breed) the addition of our clueless little pug came as quite a shock. They more than make up for it in personality, though :)

You should PM Una B if she doesn't see this thread. She breeds pugs and also owns horses.

So no, my dogs dont go near the horses, they're dangerous dontcha know lol!

I think if the horse is well behaved and used to dogs its good fun for the dogs to "help". Mine get taken to the horses most days, the field is walking distance from my house so the feeding is done as part of the dogs walk. They love the horses, but have a definate respect for them. The horses are both very tolerant of the dogs and tend to freeze whenever the dogs are near their feet so they dont stand on them :D Both horses were raised with dogs and puppies though :)

I have never hacked out with my pugs, although i do with my labs. Pugs arent always the most obedient so i'd worry about them wandering infront of cars whilst im trying to keep hold of them and the horse, i do hack out with the labs though as they are very well behaved. The pugs get an occassional gallop on the farmland with the horses, they can never keep up :D

Aww your pugs look so cute! I love the video: Dave runs around my living room like that! Nice to see there are horse owners out there with horses, I haven't met many pug owners, let along people who own pugs and horses! He isn't the most obedient when he gets distracted and being so small as well, I don't think it's a good recipe to hack out with! You will have to let me know if you plan to breed anymore, I would love to get Dave a friend!
