Spring is in the air apparently and my gelding has decided he's a stallion again. Having just moved yards 3 and a bit weeks ago, my horse has now jumped into the field next door to be with the mares twice in the last week. At this rate we'll be getting asked to leave
He's managed to break down the top rail of the post and rail fence each time and then jumped whats left. Unfortunately there's also a strand of wire at the top of the fence and he's managed to skin half his back legs on this during yesterday's escape bid.
We're going to try putting up some electric fence to stop him trying. Just wondered if anyone knew of any herbal remedies that might calm his hormones down? I've seen that Dodson and Horrell do a "Stroppy Gelding" and Global Herbs do "Rig Calm". Does anyone have any experience of trying these? Did they work?

I used Agnus Castus (sold as Hormonise) for Governor and it seemed to work quite well. He's not particularly riggish and doesn't have a clue what to do when he comes within 10 metres of a mare but he does like to play stallions with his fieldmates and that started to translate to his behaviour with us.

There is nothing like a herd of unshod pregnant mares to teach the male of the species some manners, especially of the old battle axe type! LOL
Can he not have a companion or be in with the mares? Or is he too much of a pest?
He might also be Magnesium deficient, quite common this time of year. (most of the calmers are Mg Oxide 25 kg sack at feed merchant only a few £) Mg deficiency can get them rather excitable and loopy.

He's on Magnesium Oxide at the moment, about 15g a day (primarily for his feet).
He has two gelding to keep him company but he spends a lot of his time patrolling the fence to keep them away from "his" mares. YO doesn't want him in with the mares as she doesn't like mares and geldings together, so that's not an option.
We're going to put some electric fencing up. I might give the agnus castus a try if he's still being a pain.
Apparently he's doing the full stallion routine to the mare in the stable next to him. As she's in season she's encouraging him!

There's a sweet gelding at our yard who is also never a really happy boy unless he's got a mare or 2 in the field with him. Last year, he jumped a 5-bar gate to get to a little herd that had a couple of mares and a couple of geldings in it. He forgot that he didn't know the geldings and hadn't been properly introduced and first he hurt himself jumping the gate, then the herd ganged up on him and beat him up. Poor lad. He's not a rig or anything, and absolutely no stallion like behaviour with people. But he has been out all winter in a mixed herd of geldings and mares and he has been much happier. Not surprised though coz he was caught doing a HUGE favour for one of the mares who had come into season and was flirting outrageously with him! Just one of those things I think. My friend - same yard - has a very macho looking TB and he couldn't care less about mares. Maybe it's a bloke thing???
