Hi All,

Planning to do a fair bit of Showing with my youngster this year - mostly coloured classes.
I don't know anyone experience doing Coloured classes & looking for some advice.

What do judges look for??

My mare has lovely markings, identical on both sides - she is starting to develop a nice top line & flatwork & the likes of lateral work are really coming on nicely.
She has a wonderful medium & working trot when she gets going & a MAHOOSIVE uphill canter which we will be working on over the next couple wks.

So all tips & advice welcome.

What sort of tips are you after?

Showing classes for coloured horses can be a completely mixed bag, dependent upon where you go and the level of the show you compete at. Whether it is affiliated or not...etc

One thing I can say is that markings don't matter at all.

Some shows will lump all natives/cobs/traditionals together and all non-natives together. This means you could be competing against a pony on a horse, or vice versa. This will also determine whether the judge rides or not in ridden classes.

Need more info on what you'd like to know before I can help anymore!

Ok so all the show classes will be ones where the judge rides also. Wouldn't be many native breeds if any in them if that at all helps. Really just wondering what the judging criteria in general for this type class is?

Have you got a picture??

They are judged as a type, you get either your "big hairys" or your sporty plaited and trimmed version.

I'd probably recommend joining horsegossip, thats a more specified showing forum :)

It's pretty much the same as in hunter classes, the ride judge will be looking for a forward moving responsive ride that's balanced and works forwards into the contact. Most ride judges I know ride in a classic style, pushing from the seat and leg into the rein contact and asking for good inside bend, they won't sit around wiggling their fingers to get a horse to drop so don't rely on this! As with any class with a ride judge make sure you get experienced riders to ride your horse so he's used to other riders.

Conformation will be judged against type, but with coloureds it can come down to judges preference and horses with a good presence. Good, even markings will help but won't (or shouldn't) get placed above good conformation and a nice ride.

Hope that helps, I'm by no means an expert at this but have been showing for many years, have judged at local level and have stewarded for panel judges quite a lot too :)

THANK YOU! :) That is exactly the info I was looking for... lots to work on but think she will do well based on below. Oh & good advice re getting experienced riders to ride her to get used to diff seats etc - thankfully I can call on my fab instructor for that one:D

if you go to any type of affiliated level... then you have all sorts of classes largely just a colored class even at county level. they will divide natives and non natives.

chaps/bspa are well worth looking into, and for all other shows then enter as your type, sports horse, hunter, riding, comp horse etc.

if you go county level etc then it often depends if your class is hoys/rihs qualifier as to if the judge rides, at chaps shows etc then it depends on the class.

don't fear a ride judge, they are used to sitting on anything but as you say do get them used to other riders.

I show coloureds. Totally goes on judges preference my lad is built like a l/w hunter so shown in plain browband some days we go out and judges love him but other you'll find they like what I call 'pretty browband types' depends what level your showing at as to if the judge will ride. More often than not yes they will.
From what I've seen this year markings havnt come into it as much seen a few minimally coloureds placed well at county and hoys.
