The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust are looking for spare bits to take out to their rescue centre and distrubute to the local farmers. This is a great charity who helps to educate the local population and offers education for the owners and free veterinary care for the horses and donkeys at the markets and at their main centre.

Members of the local population think nothing of using bath chains and rope to act as bits and reins- the charity hand out the bits to these owners.

The URL is below and this contains the address to send it to. (in Surrey!)

Please help if you can!

Great thanks. Its just that I have some non snaffle bits that I will never use again. Presumably better than a bit of chain though!

Anything is better than a chain.

Also if you saw the bits they have on offer out there that slice through the tongue and cause massive mouth deformaties then you would put them in anything else and it would still be an improvement!

The fb page has lots of pictures and a good description of the work they do out there, and if anyone is thinking of taking a sabbatical, or Gap Year then I would look at the work they do out there!

Definitely got a couple spare. Probably more like 5.5" though, but again got to be better than what they've got.

OMG at the photos on their website, poor things.

Don't they want just smaller bits though, ie. bits of 5" and under. When I contacted them a couple of years ago that's the information I received.

They will take bits of all types and sizes. They need bits to fit everything from Donkeys all the way up to horses.

(I have had a word about this with them!)

I have half a dozen randing from 4"-5.5" so will dig them out and post, will ask everyone at yard too!

Would it be possible to have a collection box which can then be sent to the charity? I know it would be expensive to post, but i am sure it would work out cheaper to send one large box, rather than lots of packages- especially if everyone chipped in some pennies in for postage... just a cheeky idea!!

I think some of mine might be partially chewed happy mouths, are these of any use?

If you have seen the poster you will see the type of bits the locals use- very chewed HP bits are a massive improvement! If they can't be used as bits I am sure they will find another use for them, most likely in their touring class rooms.

I never even realised that there was a charity doing this. I've taken bits with me on trips to Ghana to swop for the awful things that they had in the horse's mouths on the beach ride horses that used to be next to our hotel. Generally speaking those horses were all araby types, about 15h, but even a bit that is too big would be better than what they had in at the time.

So glad you put this up OP.

Oh I have a few will fish them out they are all pony sized too!! Well done op for pOsting they might as well gO to a good cause rather than gathering dust!

Thank you everyone! They are always looking for equipment to take out there and hand out to the local populations, and use in their medical centre; namely bits, headcollars, bandages and flyrugs.

If you have any spare equipment that you don't need any longer please send it off to this fabulous charity!!

I will try to find a youtube clip of the local lads playing donkey ball at the main centre. Premiership football teams send out strips and the boys play 'for those teams' It's hilarious! Their seats are fantastic!!!

Our local club holds regular second hand tack sales and I wondered about putting a box our for people to put things in after the sale if they don't want to take it home.

I will ask the committee! Are there any other charities that want old bits and things?
