Having a cr***y start to the New Year!

New Years Eve I got flattened by one of my horses and have concussion.
Have spent all this week poulticing my daughter`s pony for an abcess and he is still hopping lame.
Tomorrow I have got to have my wonderful old cob put down as his cancer has progressed rapidly and he is now miserable and obviously in pain.
I am dreading it.

A massive hug coming your way!

sounds like you've really had a bad time. At least you know your doing the right thing tomorrow, letting him go with some dignity.

Oh that's very sad, of course have a hug.

I don't know if you've had one PTS before, but I have once - here is my experience, for what's it worth.

The night before was awful, sobbing at bed time and woke up at the crack of dawn feeling sick and exhausted. However the actual event was better than I thought. I let him have some lovely grass, the vet came and did it by injection. I stood infront of him, he went down very quickly and I made sure he knew I was right there for him. It takes a couple of minutes for their heart to stop. And be prepared for the "sigh" - you think they are gone, then the air comes out of their lungs. If you aren't expecting it, it can be upsetting, but it's just part of the process.

I thought I'd never be able to leave him, but funnily enough, within about a minute I realised he wasn't in his body anymore, gave him one last kiss and walked away. I felt a huge weight had been lifted then, because I knew he wasn't in pain any more.

One other piece of advice I was given was to have his horsey pal there too. We then let him sniff his body, which apparently helps with the separation. He did this, then proceeded to take a huge bite of grass from right beside my old boy's ear

All in all, it's a very sad thing to have to do, but I took great comfort from knowing I'd timed it right, and made sure he had had the best life possible, right up to the end. I hope it's not too awful for you. Good luck

Poor you. <Sprout>. (Arms round Sprout for hug). You know you are doing the right thing. He won't be miserable any more now and I am sure up to now he has been happy. I am sure pony will sort himself out and by the spring things will feel much better.

Poor poor you, what a horrible few weeks.

(((hugs))) coming your way

You know bad things come in threes, if you're superstitious, the fall, the foot and the poor old boy's end....that's the lot and then you can think about moving forward.

Bless you and sending you vibes for a much improved remainder of the year....

(((((((HUGS)))))))))))

Poor you. tomorrow is the best and kindest thing you can do for your old boy. This poem gave me lots of comfort when I had my dog PTS due to cancer.

Will be thinking of you. Its never easy but be strong for him and hope both you and the pony get well soon. Here's to a more positive remainder of 2008 xxx

So sorry to hear about your bad start to 2008. They say that things come in 3s so hopefully things will start to get better for you.

(((((((hugs))))))))

What a terrible time. So sorry your boy is crossing Rainbow Bridge today but I hope in some small way it will bring you comfort to know that you are doing the kindest thing you can do, even though it breaks your heart.

Virtual hugs by the million on their way to you x

Thank you all for your kind words, it really has helped.

Puzzle had the biggest feed he has ever seen, with lots of carrots and apples, and then he couldnt believe it when he got extra strong mints too.
It was all so peaceful, and I like to think he is having a painfree canter with my beautiful young Connemara Harvey who I lost two years ago.
I can hardly see for the tears, but have some very happy memories.
Thank you all so much for your kindness.
