For poor Boots the dog! At half11 last nite he started crying in his bed and when I called him to the kitchen he was horrendously lame in a back leg. He was pitifully crying and in a huge amount of pain so after a quick call to my dad in dub (very good doggy person) we decided he was most definitely not being a drama queen and rang the vet. Thank god for an agri practice with a super out of hours service. We got him in to the car and he had a full blown panic attack screaming, growling, crying and shaking. He just couldn't understand why he was so sore and why I couldn't fix it. Vet was shocked by how much pain he was actually in so we prioritised getting pain killers into him and she tried to examine his leg. There are a few possible things wrong and he's going back in shortly for a full investigation. It is possibly a torn cruciate ligament, torn muscle, spiral fracture, severe infection due to a bite(though we cannot see any bite marks but they will clip his bum and hind leg today to double check), or some form of a clot that has moved to a hind leg. If it is a bite they reckon either a cat or rat has done it but in all honesty I don't think he has been bitten as he is the type that if he was he would come straight to me and "tell" me and he def didn't do that at the yard yest. We got him doped up on great painkillers, antibiotics and a sedative. The drugs kept him quiet from about half1 to half5 this morning and I'm bringing him back in shortly for further investigation. The poor wee thing is bawling and so sore. Every time I look at his eyes I want to cry coz there is s much pain. I have never ever seen him turn down food but he has done so last nite and this morn. Poor little baby. So if there are any spare vibes floating around can my poor little drama queen doggy have them while we try figure out what is wrong with him!

awwww poor baby! I hope you get to the bottom of that quick - I hate seeing animals in pain. Vibes comin your way for Boots x

How frightening, it seems strange that it came on so suddenly, hope the vet can find something this morning. I wouldn't worry about him eating it is probably better that he doesn't in case they need to operate.Keeping everything crossed for you and Boots.

Thanks guys. I'm worried but trying not to get upset coz he will try and cuddle me if i'm upset and he's too sore for that!

He has been admitted for xrays and further investigation. He has a grossly enlarged lymph node which the vet said is quite worrying when it has come on so suddenly; She said ideally they'll find a mild fracture on xray as otherwise when he is in so much pain and his symptoms have come on so quickly it could be very serious.

Severe infection due to a rat bite but boots is ok It's a tiny little bite between two of his pads that took hours to find but he is going to be fine. Vet said if I hadn't got him in last nite when he got the anti-bs he would have been dead by now. He is also sporting quite the interesting clipped leg. Because infection had travelled they had xrayed top of leg first as that is where the swelling was but there was nothing there. then when clipping his foot found a tiny red mark and when she pressed it a load of goo came out and that was the source of the infection. So heavyduty antibiotics and painkillers and no more rat chasing and he will be fine

You must be so relieved. Well done for getting him treated so quickly and well spotted by your vet!! Hopefullyt he will be back to his usual self before too long.

Poor poor Boots, it must have been awful for both of you. So glad they found the cause and that you acted so quickly. Hope he's soon up to full health - just no ratty chases!

JDx

Thanks guys. It really has told me to always trust your gut feeling. Boots is a serious drama queen and is a major wimp at times but last nite his poor little eyes just said it was more than just a tweak. I am indebted to my vets they really are fabulous. He is still quite woozy and seems a bit confused by the christmas tree....i'm guessing the fairylights are spinning a bit. While Boots is on bedrest for the next few days we are going to bait the yard extensively and catch the last of the rats. They have only appeared because of the snow and it is the first time in the year I have been with OH (it's his yard) that I have ever seen them around and the semi feral cats that live on the yard are doing nothing! The cats admittedly do live in the farm rather than the horse yard but we can't persuade any of them around to the stables

I've only just caught up with this! I'm so relieved for you it wasnt anything horrendous. Hope he is feeling much better very soon. x
