Any suggestions as to how I can stop him barging out his stable please?

Hi, as soon as I put his head collar and lead rope on (in his stable) and go to walk him through the slable door he shoots forward and more than anything I'm worried about him standing on my foot..(which he has done and it was very painful).

He is new so he may just need some time to settle and is a little worked up as its a new yard etc. He is a 13 year old idx.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do?

Depends on whether he is being rude or worried about the door. If its the latter then he will settle down in time.

My lad did this twice, both times he was made to walk backwards into his stable and made to stand, he stopped and has never done it since.

Read up on using a Rope pressure halter, its the most important piece of kit in my tackroom.A sharp "back up " and a wiggling thumb in his chest will send him back as well, both have always worked for me

He's not worried about the door just pushing his luck with me..its tricky as he's so much stronger than me

With my bargy boy the best thing I found was a schooling stick and a sharp slap on the chest when he tried to push forward. Pressure on the chest with a hand won't stop a horse that's determind to go. He respected that much more than anything I could physically do, and was much safer. I kept one by the door for a long time, and have needed it less and less.

How do you know he isn't worried about the door?
What does he do when he gets outside?

He's been stabled at his previous yard and I've seen him led in and out of the stable several times without issue, although I never led him. He doesn't do anything once he's out just stands still, he doesn't appear anxious or upset and he is ok being led into the stable and is very settled in the stable.

My 16.2 id used to do this and basically i had to hold tight and teach her the word wait it took some time but we got there. Now all i have to say is wait and she will stand there until i say come on then! As my previous posts my mare used to be a bit of a handful to say the least but two years down the line she is perfect..well nearly! Teaching voice commands is the best way to train a horse. Sky used to throw me around the stable when i first got her even pinned me up the wall once Saying all this, if he is new he may just be getting used to his surroundings and trying you out if this is the case now is the time to give him his boundaries. Sorry bout the essay - hope some help!

Best thing to do is everytime he does it just back him up though the door, walk him back, back up. Repeat, repeat repeat.

Have a workman like atitude to it and be firm but don't get into a pulling/pushing war.

I would wrap the lead rope around his nose then back through the bottom of the head collar for more control. A friends horse used to drag you to the field unless you did this and it worked every time. x

Put a chain up on the door and alway have it up When you go in. It's surprising how fast they learn!

What is the doorway like? Is the door inset and Walls outward?

Thanks for the tips he's much better now, we had a battle of wills to get him to go through a archway and I swear he was smiling and waiting for me to give up...anyway after half an hour of standing there he gave up and walked through good as gold. Something tells me he's testing me?
