I wondered if anyone has any suggestions of things I can do with my new horse (got him 3 wks ago) whilst stabled. He is in because of the awful deep snow and going out for a few little hours.

But is there anything I can do apart from usual grooming etc to keep him entertained and ideally help build a bond when he is in?

Thanks

Not a lot really apart from grooming and letting him settle in. The nice thing is he will have chance to get to know you before you start wanting to do more and he will be more familiar with his surroundings and you.

I spent a couple of hours skewering lumps of carrot, apple and swede onto baling twine one evening so that mine could have a few vegetable kebabs. She troughed through them in double quick time and really enjoyed them. Must say they were rather hard work and she now gets a decahedron filled with pony nuts.

I made the apple and carrot kebabs.... took ages to make - she had demolished it within about 2mins lol!!

Snack a balls are good too

Gave foalie a football today and he loved stomping on it. The hanging lickit ball lasted a week and I found it in pieces on the floor! But he really likes the turnip on a rope and will spend hours trying to eat it/kill it!

my horse is stuck inside too with this awful weather, i have been walking her in hand through the barn everyday (also turning out in the school, although dont know if you have access to this) she also has a lick-it and one of those treat-ball things.....very spoilt girlie! lol

Heavy plastic containers - the sort thin bleach comes in.

They are easy to rinse out and safe for treat dispensers. You can have several and put an assortment of treats in them or you can plug the end with a carrot or swede bung if you have a horse like my yearling.

(If the idea of bleach is scary buy cheap plastic watering cans - a couple of quid rather than the extortionate sums charged for anything equestrian)

Clicker training - great book by. Alexander kurkland(?). You could try teaching something useful like picking up each foot for picking out when you tap it!!!

Search on here for clicker threads. Can be controversial for more complicated things but for just bonding and having fun it's great.

My pony I'd in with the bad weather also and I give him a treat ball with parsnip, suede, corrupt, apple and turnip in it in little chunks with some pony nuts an he loves it! Hanging vegetables on a string is another good one. Also buying them a stable lick which is a box you put on th floor keeps them well entertained! A friend if mine gives her horse something called "just grass" which you soak in a bucket which they eat as kindov a hay replacement, whilst still having their hay nets. I also give my pony 4 different hay nets around his stable which he likes tl entertain himself swapping between them! Hope this helps! X:)
