I have an ex racer I am considering doing some inhand classes with once he's up to a nice weight & has gained some topline.
I used to show in hand as a kid and its been a hell of a long time but I always used to show welshies who had a leg in each corner & I had it easy really. They'd do it all for me & rarely did it go wrong.
I thought maybe taking my boy would be a challenge and be nice to get him used to show atmosphere etc etc.
Problem is he tripods a lot & I'm not really sure the best way to teach him to stand square? Are there any tips & tricks?

Go easy on me, but treat me as a beginner because as I say, I've been blessed with never really having to know this except for a quick ask to shift weight?

I Had to do a lot of this for my western training.

I can explain what I do - Its all done from the ground first, I would lead round in bridle or headcollar. I would always use A-B-C-E. Markers to start with.

I would say walk on and walk to the A or C first, say whoah stand and try to get them to stop square. Once they have stood I would gently lift any leg not in alignment into the correct place. Then say good boy/girl and given them a reward of a pat or 2 pony nuts , just a small treat. I would then say walk on and try at the C end the same process.

This exercise I would repeat for about 20 mins then try at E or B . I did this either every day or every other day. Once they got the idea I would try ridden with someone on the ground to correct any leg out of place. It takes time and patience, there are probably other methods but this is the one I use.
