Washed horses tail today as it was filthy and am showjumping on Sunday, would of done it Sat normaly but am working for the next two days and don't want to worry about doing it Sunday morning. Today I plaited it loosely and folded it up and wrapped vetwrap around the top to keep it in place (not too tightly), which worked well and un-vetwrapped it and un-plaited it this evening and one clean tail! However as i'm working tomorrow he will be out all day from 8am to 5pm and i'm slightly worried about leaving something around his tail all day...don't want it to drop off lol! Any ideas on what I can do to keep it out the mud? xx

Baby oil? If you have any?
Failing that put an old pair of tights over it and secure with a hair bobble around the hair, not the dock. x

I second baby oil, if you put a load on tail, brush it thru, dirt and poo just slides off.

Doesn't make it greasy, just makes it shiny, don't drown tail in it!! We have a spray bottle that we fill with baby oil so just spray a bit on. Out hunting last week our master asked how I kept my tail so nice and white!

If you put baby oil on your hands, rub it around then run your hands through the tail, that really helps.

Although i've always found the Carr,Day&Martin mane conditioner spray has always worked the best on my boys really thick tail. Always kept it in lovely untangled condition and got him good favours with the judges!

Only other product that ive actually liked is that Cowboy magic gel!

has your T/O rug got a tail flap??

i put SWA's grey tail plaited into a pair of tights folded up & then use the other leg to tie to the tail flap. stays put really well but if the dim twits (eg my sod) gets his tail caught it just pulls off.

I make tail bags. Much easier than fussing with lotions and creams and cheaper in the long run. I can make about 10 tail bags from one £2 piece of fabric.

My arab mare has her tail permanently in a tail wrap, except for when we go to shows. It secures below the dock, so doesn't help the very top, but is good for the rest of it. However, this is more because it is so long, than keeping it clean!

2 pairs of old tights.......cut off gusset and the foot.

After washing tail, some cowboy magic then split tail into 3 section.

Put a section into the tight....should have 3 sections of tail in tights

Then plait the 3 section and fasten with a hairband at the bottom.

Works a treat
