I may have to put him on shavings!

Any ideas?

He ate a small corner of his bed when there was hay a plenty! Typical.

Someone said spray with Diluted Jeyes Fluid but I dont like the idea of him eating that !

TIA

Always used to use Jeyes sprinkled from a watering can - not sure what else to suggest - perhaps mixing his wet patch in with the rest of his bed but thats smell, dirty and not a whole lot of good esp if the stables not v well ventilated... We used to put horse raddish or colemans mustard on bandaged on a horse that was on box rest ..

I've heard about using jeyes fluid. My boy sometimes eats his bed so whenever he starts I leave his bed a little dirtier than I'd like and leave the dirtier stuff at the top which seems enought to put him off.

I used Yucca bed - i think that is what it is called bought it from my local saddlery, it has slowed him down to practically not eating his bed at all.
Along with this I used to leave some urine soaked straw and scatter it on the top of the fresh bed, didn't look very nice but it did deter him from eating also used to buy eucaluptus oil a few drops in water and spray on the bed.

I always leave a huge wad of good quality haylage in his stable more than he needs so if he has the muchies he SHOULD eat this instead.

PLEASE, please be careful!

My boy used to eat his bed, I didn't think much of it as it never caused an issue until this time last year he got terrible colic and I almost lost him...............I have never seen my boy in such pain. He took weeks to recover.

The only thing that could have caused it was that he had eaten his straw bed.

I have him on rubber matting and shavings and would never, ever have a horse on straw again.

I'll contradict that - all of mine are on straw and all eat their bed. I don't see why they should not, and has never caused any problems, however my straw is lovely and they are used it.

That's exactly what I thought............

My boy had always eaten his bed never any issues not even a cough! Super straw, great quality.................

I just couldn't risk it again.

To be fair colic is an unknown quantity and very rarely is the reason accruately pinpointed.

You could not hand on heart say whether it was straw, a chunk of wood he had found, adhesion of the gut or a bacteria change that caused it.
