Puppy Crate/Cage. Make sure puppy has had the chance to go out last thing at night. Put to bed in crate/cage. Puppy less likely to want to mess in his/her bed. Make sure the 1st thing you do in the morning is let the dog out. Both my labs, springer and JR went through the night by 5 months. Mind you they probably didn't go to bed till midnight and up by 6:30/7:00am.
Echo the crate idea. Our puppy was going through the night by 3 months old! Also if pooing is the problem, then think about what you are feeding. We found some dog foods went straight through our puppy - changed her onto James WellBeloved foods and found a great improvement.
Well we are awaiting a larger crate as he has outgrown his smaller one but he makes a mess in it regardless of us taking him out last thing and letting him out early, some nights (in a crate) he won't make a mess, once or twice!! but outside his cage, theres been one night (and that was last night) that he didn't make a mess. he was on pedigree dry food mixed with meat but it went straight through him, weve put him on a dry food called autarky 100% natural food and some days it seems a hell of alot better but a couple of times i've wondered whats wrong with him when over night he's done 4 messes and other nights it's one!!!!
Is he fully up to date on worming (with proper stuff from the vets)? Sometimes worms can make them loose, and if they are loose then much harder for them to hold on overnight.
Another thought I had was to play around with his feed times - perhaps give him the majority of his food during the day and only a very small meal early in the evening?
At 5 months you should be cutting down on the number of feeds per day. Make his last main meal at around 4-5pm, spend lots of time playing during the evening to help push the food through his system. Give him a light snack around 9ish to help him settle overnight, make sure he's goes out to do his business last thing around 11ish and he should be able to hold himself til morning. Think you're probably feeding too much too late and it's not having enough time to pass through his system before he goes out.
We've had very, very few accidents with our 7month old pup. He was virtually house trained when we got him at 8 weeks and has been more or less going through the night since. We have had him in a crate (still is) and he knows that is his "den" or space. Unusually for a Lab he doesn't bolt his food - he always has food available of his own choice, so maybe that helps in his toilet habits.
we have a 9 week old puppy that goes through the night. She is on a complete food and fresh meat diet. We make sure she has food down all the time, a complete puppy mix and she helps herself when she wants. She is also trained to poo and pee on puppy pads and will only go on these. We don't leave one in her crate but make sure she has one outside so as soon as we get her up in the morning she goes and again last thinkg at night
Yea all worming is up to date, he has his brekkie, then dinner then tea around 5-6 o'clock. His mess isn't loose at all, otherwise i could understand why he would make such a mess. he was on his own for 2 hours today whilst food shopping and made a mess, even though i let him out before i went and he'd spent most of the morning roaming the garden. but sometimes we can come back and he won't have made one mess and he will happily go outside and go to the toilet when we get back.
You probably already do, but really praise him when he does do his business outside (go really OTT) - this does mean you have to stay outside with him as it is important that the praise is immediate. It also helps if you can get them to go on command so to speak, put dog outside when you know he needs to go and tell him to 'hurry up' or something and then give massive praise when he does go - That way when you put him outside before you go leave him for anytime you can actually get him to do something (rather than him just mouching round the garden having a sniff and waiting till you've gone out to go!!!).
When I'm working nights my JR will get my dad up a couple of times in the night sometimes to go out (even though dad lets him outside before he goes to bed). However if I'm at home I put Ozzie (JR) out before I go to bed and tell him to 'hurry up' bingo he will normally do both and I get an undisturbed nights sleep .
Whenever he goes outside, if i say wee wee he will go straight up onto grass and go for one, loads of praise later, and he learns very quickly. OOOh i don't know what to do about at night though, he went out at 2 o'clock this morning for a wee then i came down at 6 this morning and he'd done a poo and wee????
I think it will come with time. Labs are intelligent dogs. What has worked for us is loads of praise when he goes outside - but he was told off if he'd done it in his crate (and he knows it was a "naughty" thing to do. However, because it has only happened on very rare occasions we accept that he must have had an upset tummy or something. After saying that - watch him poo in his crate tonight!!!
