My boy wears an underrug under his h/w turnout. The last few days he's been losing his mane exactly where the neckcover goes. Any tips? He'll be bald soon!!!!

Thats why I have stopped using my neck cover. To be honest I don't think neck covers are really that necessary - well not in our climate anyway, so I'm not too bothered about losing it. I would prefer him to have a neck cover on during the night though.

Mine goes bald every year!

But she is only allowed out with a neck cover as she would be a mud hippo if she went out without!

Be interesting to hear if there are any solutions...
am thinking sew silk lining inside?

Some full necks have a seem right in the middle of the neck cover, and i have found these are the worse for hair loss!

Use a seperate neck cover. Any rugs with necks all in one always rub, even with hoods, etc underneath. Not much youcan do about it

I found my separate neck cover also rubbed his mane out. I think if your horse is susceptible, he will lose it whatever neck or hood he wears. I've tried a snuggy hood under a standard neck, combo rugs & separate neck cover - all of them have rubbed his mane out. The same rugs on my previous horse didn't cause any hair loss. Both horses were TBs. I've just accepted that he will lose 6 inches of his mane now every winter.

take the necks off and embrace the mud!!! the manes fall out when they get too hot. you could compromise and put neck rug on for turnout and no necks for stabling!! no they wont get cold.

There is only one solution !!

Mine suffered with this every year - I would loose 12 - 18 inches of mane - first shows of the season I had first five plaits then nothing on a 17.2 hunter.

This year I have a full mane and it is because I bit the bullet and ditched the neck - I did expect the clip on the neck to grow quicker than the body - but no this has not happened.

Neck rugs are a relatively new idea - years ago horses were clipped had no necks on their rugs and nothing died !!

Would also add horse does not miss the neck either always comes in warm
