I'm doing my first hunter trial on Sunday - the boy is jumping nicely but still hates anything that he can't see through (I put this down to him being blind in one eye and not knowing if something is going to jump out on him!) but I'm working thim through it.

Going to do pairs, a small course and I can get around all the jumps if needed. Walking the course tomorrow so will discount anything too scarey as I want him to come away with a positive memory of it.

He's always better jumping on a hack so I thought this would be a good intro to jumping compeitions - we still have issues in the jumping paddock (but not indoors) and he has been known to rear in the paddock when napping out of a jump. I don't want him to associate jumping with jumping in a field and it being stressful...hence the cross country first.

anyways, my aim is a no pressure experience - he's been to shows, is boxed out on hacks so going out shouldn't stress him and he's with a horse he trusts.

So, any more tips (apart from breath and enjoy!)

Thanks

Sounds like you've got the right idea already. It is great you are doing a pairs small course as that will give him the confidence and he will more than likely really enjoy himself!
I'm sure you'll both have a great time - good luck!
