Any Vets in the House?

I'm a first year and I'm studying straight from school, but I know at least ten who are studying as their second degree and a small number of graduates who are doing a two in one for the first two years. So it is doable and from various backgrounds.

OH is one - he went straight from school. Major issue is fees if it's not your first degree as you have to pay full fees (about 20k for clinical years) - but you mentioned that it will be your first degree. Not sure about fees for mature students not doing a second degree though.

Apparently there weren't that many mature students when my OH qualified - possibly because it's very hard to work while at vet school because of the requirement for Extra Mural Studies (EMS) for a lot of weeks of the holidays and in clinical years you are on call during rotations (Cambridge have this building called "hut" where the on call students sleep when they are on call overnight.

I did it straight from school and am now in my 4th year. There are probably about 8 or 9 mature students/post-grads in my year. The fees can be prohibitive (£16000 in years 1 and 2, £21000 for 3,4,5- or thereabouts, might have changed). I think that some of the vets schools are charging the same £3000 as the undergrads, but not all.

I went straight from school too. There were I think 3 mature students out of 56 in my year. As already mentioned if its a second degree you have to pay your own fees which for veterinary is pretty hefty.

No I've never done a degree so I'm guessing I'd probably have to do an access year starting Sept and then study after that.....it's such a long route but I've started to realise that at 30 it really isn't completely out of my reach....

I think I'm right in saying that there was a guy at Liverpool who will/did graduate at 52. So it's certainly not out of your reach. I would phone/email the vet schools and let them advise you.

i went straight from 6th form college. there were a handful of skint mature students in my yr - i could never have afforded to do it as a 2nd degree - full fees are huuge!

Looking into it I think that I'd be better off looking at Osteopathy as there will be a chance of me actually earning a bit part time aswell.

Going to research into it tomorrow and speak to colleges - there is one 2 miles from my house so maybe fate!
