My horse is on box rest with a suspensory injury. The vets coming out on Monday to rescan and if he's given the all clear he can be turned out. We are desperate to get him out asap so we are hoping very much he can go out Monday night. However i want to sedate him with Sedalin before hand as he will go mental when he gets turned out but the vet will have already sedated him by injection to scan him. Would the sedalin be ok to use on top of the injectable sedation? Or would you think I would have to wait till teh next day.

Thanks x

You MUST discuss this with your vet. It may influence what they sedate him with to scan or they may ask you to give the sedalin before hand so that you could give him more later if needed. Phone them for a chat, I am sure they will be happy to help!

Why don't you ask the vet when he/she is there on Monday ? or give the practice a ring.

I wouldn't like to say, depends what time he is injected with sedative I suppose

All I know is if you give say 2mls and he's not sleepy you can't then give more on top it doesn't work like that, I'd give at lease 4mls, it depends on the horse, but discuss with your vet

Yes definitely discuss it with your vet. By the sounds of it, you might get away with sedalin only (inc for scan) if you already have some. Administer it an hour before he arrives and then if necessary he can top up with dom/torb. DO ring him in advance. Alternatively he can inject him with a concoction including ACP which will make the sedation last longer. ACP is commonly incorporated in sedation required to last for longer periods eg.clipping. However worth bearing in mind that injectable ACP is currently in short supply so best to ring him first and discuss. I would think if hes very susceptable to sedalin anyway you'd get away without any other sedation on top.

As above , talk to your Vet . I was at a stud where a stallion was to be gelded , yard manager had sedated the horse as he was abit of a handful , Vet came , Vet and Yard Manager didnt see each other , groom took Vet to horse , horse given sedation injection , it was enough for an overdose , killed the horse .

Yeah would talk to your vet.
On my last horse we had to use sedalin on him before the vet could come and take bloods etc. But the vet had to top up how much sedation was required from the needle as the sedalin didnt have much effect on him.
When the same horse was pts in dec the vet gave me a tube of sedalin to give before he got there. And then topped horse up with more on arrival so we could pts without my boy moving the anesthetic to go in.
But talk to your vet first before you give him any as it affects the amounts of sedation they give if needed when they are out.
