Hi, im looking to try something different, and Id like to give western riding a go, My boys a part bred appaloosa and his dad was born and bred in Kansas and riddern western so im hoping its in his blood! lol

Anyway, can I teach my self western and just go and buy a saddle, or is it a bit more technical than that? and is it a comfy way of riding for both horse and rider?

:)

Depends how technical you want to make it!

It is a comfortable way of going out for a hack, but think how much more you can do with it with a bit of instruction...western games, reining, cattle, showing classes etc etc.

I have really found that learning Western has helped me get my head around using my weight correctly for English riding.

Hi,

I have been converted after sending my youngster to a Western Trainer to be re-started

I am currently having lessons and my main issue is over riding like mad!

Below is a pic of my lad who is also a part bred Appy looking great in one of his training sessions I still have a way to go so no pics of me till I look less like a gonk lol

Hi, where is the pic? :)

I learned to ride Western initially and still enjoy it sometimes. For fun hacking, there's not a lot technically to learn. Stirrup length is a bit longer than English generally is, you use less contact - it's a relaxed way of going. As for comfort, I always found it comfortable but now that I'm old and have arthritis in my hips, my narrower English saddle is much more comfy.
