Quick question... Smokes anyone feed bread?

A girl I know feeds her horse half a loaf of bread a day and also feeds it about 1/4 sack of carrots. (Big sack) anyone else think that's weird or just me? This is on top if adlib hay and a basic mix and chop.

I am very mean and my horse gets about a quarter of an apple as a huge treat about once a month... About a month ago, he needed to have a couple of sachets of bute, so we decided we would try the jam sandwich trick. Bute was mixed with some cherry jam, and OH had made some very fancy homemade bread, so we sliced it up and spread it with jam. Horse licked the jam off and spat out the bread. OH was devastated

Nugz has the crusts off a sarnie sometimes, but very rarely. Mainly because if you do it twice in a row you end up doing a spagetti a la lady and the tramp moment with him the next time you have a sandwich

It's not an ideal or most cost effective diet for a horse, but there could be worse I suppose. Might want to suggest the carrots and bread could be cut out completely.

I quite often give my lot toast with marmite, they love it, if I'm feeding it buted, I have to remind myself not to have a nibble on the way to the barn

My aunt's cob was fed 2 slices of bread everyday, when she went down to feed the ducks, the horses would get some bread too.

I wouldnt feed bread as rule but when worked for a charity i made a jam butty every morning to put old donkeys med on so she wiuld eat it even bought her proper butter lol

I don't now but used to back in my youth when it seemed pretty common to feed horses left over bread crusts. When I was very little I even used to commit the terrible crime of feeding other peoples horses bread when we went for walks with the dog

Haha I just found it really bizarre! Ive never heard of feeding them bread before, yes perhaps if they dont like medication then a jam sandwich but never half a loaf a day! I feel abit tight on my ned as he only gets treats once in a blue moon!

Crusty crunchy stuff very occaisionally maybe but bread generally can very, very easily cause choke as it balls up with the saliva and gets stuck in the throat. Will also get stuck between the teeth leading to more problems.
Carrots are a natural sweetner so not suitable for lami ponies, I only ever feed two or three at a time.

I give bread very rarely, just as a mini-treat, and even then only if it is a piece of dried rye, whole-grain, organic bread - never fresh, never white, never with any food additives!

I quite often treat with carrots, apples and some other veggies, but never in large amounts, so that my boy doesn't get too much sugar in his system.

I wonder how many people feed Bileys No.1 feed? It is basically bread. As a small part of the diest bread is fine unless the horse has an adverse reaction to wheat or cannot have cereals for any reason. Many working city horses were fed yesterdays bread as part of their ration for centuries.
Choke is a risk with any feed that can pack. Getting stuck between the teeth is a new one as hay or grass do a good job of flossing.

As a birthday/christmas present I get a round bakers loaf of crusty bread, cut off the top, hollow out all the dough (so it's just an empty round loaf) I then soak a load of his mix feed with apple juice till it becomes a mush. I then add chopped carrots, apples and crushed mints while mixing it all together. I then put the mix in the hollowed out loaf, put the lid on and that's his 'cake'!

We used to have a bakers shop and the unsold bread at the end of the day always went to the ponies at the stables.

If ponies grazing in the gArden ( not often) I will give them a slice of bread/toast while I eat my brekkie but not very often just a random treat, and one they don't expect.
I would be very worried giving more than a few slices and daily too.

I've used marmite sandwiches to hide a large amount of medication (cimetidine for melanomas). he was having two slices (wholemeal!) a day, used to leave it out to go a bit stale. horse also liked a very little bit of croissant in the mornings. wouldn't do it as a regular thing otherwise. I am also not convinced that carrots contain so much sugar they are a health threat-but don't feed them often anyway.

As a child I always took a slice a bread when I went to catch my pony; frankly I needed a harpoon but bread is what Mother happen to have to hand.

My mare might have once stolen some bread from people feeding ducks. Very embarrassing. They then proceeded to feed her more. She also had a go at my cheese roll whilst I was trying to eat it one day

Her fav thing is chocolate digestives. But she's not had any for yrs now. I'm mean and don't treat them now.

A horse I knew years ago died from impaction colic caused by his owner feeding him bread so I don't feed it at all

My friend used to fed her arab 5 slices of bread with his feed. She said it was a good filler. I personally wouldn't, but on occasion if at a show Ill give him a crust off my sarnie.

Very occasionally. When I'm at a competition I usually take sandwiches with me, or might by a bacon sarnie. Despite having a big net and/or eating the grass by trailer (and usually being given Polos for being good in his class!), horse always begs for what I've got. So he might get a bit of the crust of my sarnie. He quite likes brown/wholemeal I've discovered, but spits out white bread.

I don't feed bread, they do get the odd crust if we are eating sandwiches next to them. At the weekend they often get a bit of my husbands toast. I had one that liked sandwiches, peanut butter or marmite she liked in particular so you had to watch out when you were eating. Same pony also once pinched a burger at a show when the man eating it was waving it about under her nose. My mum would give her last horse jam sandwiches with her medication in, damson jam was her favourite.

I used to make my old horse a banana sandwich everyday, and he loved it. Sometimes he used to have honey instead of banana, which was ok, but not his favourite.
The riding school he came from used to feed the horses bread quite a lot, with no ill effects.

I don't, because I don't do treats, but the French are obsessed with giving horses dry bread. Several of our liveries save up their leftover bits of baguette (proper French baguettes only stay fresh for about half a day!) and bring sacks of the stuff to treat their horses. It gets everywhere and makes the horses cough because it's so dry and flaky, but the owners seem to like it...

When we were little we used to give the old shettie a slice of Wheetabix as a treat and she absolutely loved it lol, she new that if we were carrying the box she was getting some and she would come running over and do that purr thing at us, then she would run off bucking and squealing once it was gone. Only my mare will eat bread she gets the odd slice from the oh, the gelding wont touch it thinks its poison, took me two years to get him to eat polos
