Anybody got a horse with stringhalt - experiences please

I am considering taking on loan a horse with stringhalt, said to be mild.
Please does anyone have any experience or in depth knowledge of managing a horse with this condition, and how it would affect performance - (low level riding club stuff and lots of hacking and sponsored rides, bit of Dressage and Working Hunters and possibly low level jumping clinics).
Would also live out.

My girl developed this after someone at my old livery yard put a pitchfork through her leg whilst mucking out!

This was about nine years ago, and she is still able to do the same things she would have done had she not developed it. (shes 22 next year, so obviously taking things slower anyway)

The only things i tend to notice, is if she has been stood still for a while (kept in stable long, on lorry) then when she initially walks off there are a few exaggerated movements... but she seems to walk it off so that it happens every now and then.

I was once stopped by a car driver out hacking and a lady asked me why she had a strange leg action... apart from this, noone has ever really noticed! I also get used to the odd action behind every now and then! xx

Maybe ask how long he has had it too? As i said, my girl has been fine for ages with it and it dosnt appear to be getting any worse <touch wood>

All horses are different, and not all horses are perfect... IMO it wouldnt be a reason for not getting a horse, just because it had stringhalt. (others may have other opinions though!)

My horse has had it since being very young.............definitly better for living out.
Axle competes 15+ mile funrides, jumps newcomer level and has done many clinics etc
His stringhalt causes no issues to his performance and has certainly never been lame.
 
Pidgeon has an IDxTB with it. If she she doesn't come on or spot this send her a pm. I know Pidge stays in a night but she turns out as long as possible. She does everything with him XC, DR, SJ etc all at local level. I think she feeds a detox suppliment too

Pidge is 17hh ISH 12yo. Has stringhalt in his off hind. I find that feeding him NAF D-Tox has helped tremendously with this as before it would take 2 or 3 attempts to pick that hoof out, now its pretty much 1st time every time.
Same as other poster he's worse if been stood still for a while and tends to then wave his leg around. Can be awkward as people that don't know he has stringhalt think he's trying to kick but he's not, he can't help it

Try to keep as fit as possible, as much turn out as possible and as Soulfull says I do a bit of everything with Pidge. SJ up to 3' - working on bigger, XC up to BE90 level, DR, showing, farm rides etc etc.
I wouldn't be put off having another horse who suffered with strignhalt.
You can see here it doesn't affect his jumping at all

Not personal experience but a yard I was at some time ago, there was a horse with stringhalt. It was on in/out as per the other horses and in full work. He would walk really badly to start off with but did RC/RAF teams etc so didn't seem to affect him from a competing point of view.
