Anybody have any guesses as to her breed?

So this is my dog. We got her a couple of years ago, so some of the photos are pretty old. She came from a rescue shelter, so no way of tracing her parentage. Not that it really matters but we're all curious as to what she could be!

Don't have many photos showing her body shape, but her tail curls up and has a white tip. She's shaped sort of like a great dane, but smaller, obviously! She has white paws, and black spots on her stomach and part of her legs, as well as the stripes down her back etc. When she gets nervous and starts growling her hackles raise up in a major way sorta like a ridgeback.
Can post more photos if it'll help (maybe side on), just need to ask my family to send some!

Any guesses would be appreciated! Would love to see what people think she could be! :)

Guess either some staffy or even pit bull in there, or maybe some type of mastiff crossed with something smaller & finer.

So lots of people think staffi?? Interesting! We'd considered it but not in any great depth, though a boxer cross had come to mind :)
itsmylife - forgive my ignorance..lad or lab? Not really clued up on dogs!

Naryafluffy - I had never even heard of them before but google image definitely shows some resemblance! Will have to get around to checking them out more! :D

And cinnamon toast - she's not small, but not huge either. Medium sized, probably about the size of a border collie roughly? Maybe a liiiittle smaller

Greyhound has crossed our minds before! :) She's not huge. Funny mix, she is.. Looks to me like she's designed for the bush or something (we are in Africa I suppose!)

Thanks, she's lovely :) Overly protective of us, but really tolerant and friendly and loving. I miss her lots!

Some sort of greyhound cross would get my vote as well. Legs and face are suggesting it to me.

We'd thought maybe greyhound (to be fair we'd thought maybe everything!) and she does run a bit like them. Similar shape too.

Does anyone think maybe part boxer? Or even dalmatian? I only ask as she has a similar body shape and a friend's brindle boxer is very similar, but with a totally different face!

Thanks for suggestions guys :)

I think you're in SA, right? if so - could be anything! If it was a UK dog I'd say first cross bull lurcher - very popular breed with travellers/gypsies. I've got a second cross.

A bull is either pitbull or staffie x with a greyhound, a second cross is crossed again with a greyhound for more speed.

The brindle colour has to come from either staffie/bull or greyhound - I can't think of any other breeds with that colouring.

As many breeds come in brindle as don't -from Chihuahuas to Great Danes.

Boxer crosses usually have shorter heads but it could be there further back. I don't think you have the traveller dog problem but brindle mastiff types are popular in some parts so that could well be in the background but I would be very surprised if either parent or more than one grandparent was a purebred.

As you're in SA, I am even surer that she is Ridgeback x Greyhound as RR's are a popular breed out there.

I have a Ridgey x and an animal genetisist told me that this breed carry the brindle gene which sits dormant until crossed with certain other breeds (Vizsla and Greyhound being 2 of them).

A dna test will tell you for certain though :)

The breed DNA tests don't work. Some of the results when swabs from purebreds have been submitted are ludicrous -wrong continent even - so no chance of common ancestry.

Brindle is recessive to some colours but dominant to others. Red dogs rarely carry it but black dogs often do.

Does it matter what breeds or crosses are behind this dog? All you need to know for is for greyhounds avoid vallium, collies types avoid ivermectin and any other breed specific drug related issues that get published.

Thanks everyone! Lots of guesses here, to keep me thinking. Oh, we're pretty sure she's not out of even vaguely purebred stock but seeing as we know little about breed characteristics, I thought I'd see if the more clued up could see anything obvious in her :)

S4sugar - no, of course it doesn't matter. I wasn't asking for veterinary reasons either, I was simply curious. We love her to bits but often wonder why she's so odd in her character and also find ourselves wondering what type of dog she is. Doesn't really make a difference to us but its human nature to be curious I think :)

And to those who asked - yes dog is in SA :) lots of strays around, and a fair few native breeds..plus out on the farms (they were found in a box on the side of the road around the farmland) there's just loads of dogs of all types, so could be anything.
If its relevant, my sisters said the dog's sister was pitch black and a bit retriever/lab like :)

from the picture of him sitting on the sofa I would swear he was collie x lurcher :)

But having now read you are in SA - do you have collies over there?
