My boy tied up last fri. Only a mild case, his only symptom is a tucked up tummy and he shakes sometimes! but because his temp is fine, he's eating/drinking (ish), bright in himself, not sweating, willing to move, not showing colicy symptoms etc the vet is reluctant to see him and prescribe painkillers unless it worsens. I was thinking perhaps a herbal thing might help him loosen? He is on electrolytes due to him drinking less than normal.

Anyone any experiences with devils claw etc?

I would have thought he should be over it by now, I have only had two horse tie up and both were very mild, treated with pain relief, kept warm, with plenty of turnout and were back to normal within a couple of days.

If he is still looking tucked up with muscle spasms I would want further investigations done, how were his bloods when it happened?

If he is not drinking enough be careful about giving too much electrolytes as they can make a horse more dehydrated, give really wet sloppy feeds to get more fluids into him.

I've used devils claw for old arthritic types with success. And if you want to pm from your phone, go to the menu & disable 'allow view of mobile sites, you get the proper version.

if mine (TBs) show colicky signs or uncomfortable/tyeing up etc or I'm aware something wrong but unsure, I offer lavender, peppermint, yarrow, roman chamomile & german chamomile oils. Usually they self select peppermint lavender & german chamomile as a trio. I've had horses on the floor with colic & used these very effectively till vet arrived & went from point of considering pts to vet going home thinking I was being neurotic. Its all based on animal self medication and you can do courses in it (zoopharmaconosy) with Caroline Ingraham the founder. Google her - or depending on where you are www.sarabillinghurst.com / www.animalselfmedication.co.uk (same site) My friend Sara trained direcly under Caroline & both are fully insured to treat -I'm not! They use herbs, oils, all sorts and very sucessfully-google is your friend here! Give them a try also you can buy safe herbs on carolines site. Hope all fixed soon xx
