Anyone any experience of pads on feet?

The vet told me to have pads put on Muppet to minimise concussion on her foot which had the fractured pedal bone.

She is currently shod in wide webbed shoes and I wondered if it is possible to get pads that are cut to shoe shape rather than covering the whole foot, and if they are as effective if you can. I am a bit worried about covering her whole foot as she is prone to getting thrush.

Any thoughts on the best sort (obviously will be talking to my farrier and vet again, but just wanted any experiences).

We tried leather and rubber pads with one of our old horses and they rubbed awfully underneath the shoe making him even more lame. We have since tried the stuff that you squeeze in (like bath sealant!) to the sole (on to a netting fabric) which then sets. That worked really really well - it's similar (or the same) as advertised in this week's H&H as Sole-Guard, although Sole-Guard doesn't look like you need the net type fabric for it.

The modern gel pads are good. I forget what they are called but they are common now. They are made of sillicone and are expensive

but our lad wore them constantly for a couple of years with no ill effects. I would put them in again if he comes back into work. They are injected onto the sole, a nylon sheet is put under the shoe and then the sillicone is injected under this. It doesn't take long at all to dry.

The Farrier on here or nailed (lou) will know what they are called. My lad had dreadful feet and never had problems with these pads they were perfect for him. I would give them a try.

He has been on this for 6 months and previously he had equipac......bloody amazing stuff and his soles stay in fantastic condition considering they are covered up.

Thanks everyone - it looks as though the pad / filler needs to cover the whole foot then to get maximum benefit. I'll talk to vet and farrier.

Equicushion is the best. Used by endurance riders. Contains anti-thrush component to prevent formatiion of thrush. Silicon fills the void of the hoof and metal gauze/plastic pad goes between silicon and shoe.
