The vet thinks that Marnie may have damaged her hamstring. She has been lame in her near hind for a couple of weeks - only slightly, but niggling. She has been on bute (came off it on Sunday) and I had her booked in for a lameness work up tomorrow. I rode her yesterday and she felt terrible, really hopping behind.

The vet came up tonight to look at a couple of horses so I asked if I could trot Marnie up to make sure that it was going to be worth taking her over tomorrow and she is now lame in the other hind leg, and from palpation and watching her move, he thinks it is her hamstring. She is now back on bute for 3 weeks and field rest, then all going well start walking after that for 15 minutes a day and slowly building up.

I have had a look for info on similar injuries and can't find anything, has anyone any experience - how it could have happened, prognosis etc?

Thanks - this got a bit rambling, hope it makes sense!

Spring pulled her hamstring last year but didn't go lame. She just struggled to step under (particularly in canter) and started bucking. She had the physio look at her and I did (and still do) hamstring stretches with her. She had about 4 weeks off all together then lots of slow work, in a long and low outline gently building up to faster and more collected work.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, Spring's injury doesn't sound as bad as your mare's and I think it was a tweak and she was being a drama queen!!

Good luck with your horse.

think i would be unhappy about a diagnosis of hamstring lameness without other things being investigated first eg hocks/fetlock etc. is there any heat/swelling in her hamstrings? if not its unlikely that theres a tear that is significant enough to make her hopping lame. do you use an equine practice?

My old mare (now 22)tore her hamstring 3 years ago, she was doing ok then got laminitis and ended up on box rest so the whole thing stiffened up. She now has knotted scar tissue on her hamstring and a very visible dent. She has a funny walk, slamming down her hind foot flat to the ground so is mechanically lame in walk. It isn't really noticable in trot and canter. I have been working her and what ever we do it doesn't seem to get any worse. We have also tried dosing her up with bute and its still exactly the same so its not painful for her, she just looks odd in walk.
