Im looking to get a little companion pony for my youngster.

I would like to give a pony a home that 'needs' one rather than buying one privately.

Has anyone had any ponys from HAPPA or can you recommend a good place to look. I know RSPCA wont let me adopt one from there as im DIY livery and dont own my own place

Many Thanks

I had one from HAPPA, a lovely little welsh A. he was an inbred, no idea which of the stallions in the fields was his father, or which mare was his mother, his face was far far far too dished, apparantly the stud just left all the foals in with their parents, so everything was bred with everything else. I was offered a rig, which was wholly unsuitable as a companion. I could not understand how they could leave it as a rig as that would have been dangerous for any potential loaner. I then was offered the one I had, He arrived, and I was told he was up to date with dentist, injections, feet, worming etc. I signed a contract to state I would ensure his welfare. I kept him in his own paddock while I got a worm count, and I actually recieved a phone call from the worm count company telling me that he had the highest worm count they had ever come across. So I had to do quite a severe worming and worm count programme before I could put him in my paddocks. I did phone them and tell HAPPA but they were not at all interested. So treat any horse you get from them as incredibly wormy and under no circumstances put it on your grazing before worm counting and treating. We were home checked once while we had him, but the person checking was really and absolute novice around horses and had no idea about worming, farriery and dentistry, but definitely wanted him stabled at night! An odd request for a section A.

ohhhh BOSWORTH that doesnt sound good. I also would prefer them to be able to live out at least 1/2 the year. My other idea is to get one from the Market? We have Melton Market near us and a friend that works there says there are awful cases being brought into the ring :(

I just want to do a bit of good for a pony needing a good life long home

Where in the country are you?

I had been looking at the Mare & Foal Sanctuary in Devon when I was on the hunt for a pony for my son. They have quite a good selection of companion ponies at the moment according to their website:

Have also been in contact with the Blue Cross:

and also WHW in Somerset:

In the past I have had a couple of horses from Horse World in Bristol but those were returned after several years. They came out initially and did a home check and then did twice yearly check ups. Have to say they wouldn't be my first choice if I went looking again as their support wasn't great when I needed advice and just laughed at me and said the pony was 'a character'. When he went back and I phone a few months later to see if he was settling in they said 'gosh, he's a handful isn't he? tried to jump the 5 bar gate!'. They even had the vet out to take bloods as they thought he was a rig due to his interesting behaviour around their mares. I had tried to tell them for years he was a bloody nightmare
