I never have before but am currently horse hunting. There doesnt seem to be much about, well what I am looking for anyway.

So just wondered who has bought a horse in autumn/winter.

I have...on 3 occasions!!

Harry - gypsy cob weanling in October 2008
Bailey - sports horse weanling in October 2007
Kia - Connemara x TB mare in November 2008

Now trying to sell one in winter...going to be interesting...

What is it that you are looking for and what is your budget and furthest you will travel? I know a few people selling so may be able to help :)

fine and dandy - Im after an allrounder, that enjoys jumping, good in traffic, hacks out on own and in company, good to box, shoe, clip & catch. Height wise 16.1 to 17, age 6 to 12. Prefer gelding. Im near Chester and will travel up Lancashire and West Midlands. Budget around 2k. Prefer TBx no pure TB's.

I bought all three of mine in autumn/winter first in January, 2nd in december and Tilly at the end of September last year! Get them in the worst weather and the only way is up :)

I've just bought Penny, picking her up next Sat, only 7 more sleeps! She is the first 'horse' (she actually is a pony) that I have bought out right on my own.
I was given Meg to back and bring on October 24th 2000, then my mum bought her for me in April 2002.

If the time is right for you, then it shouldn't matter if its Summer or Winter.... we enjoy it anyway, whatever mother nature is going to throw at us!

I'm currently selling Lily and will be looking for another as soon as she goes. The market is definitely slower than I expected it to be but then I'm hoping that will work in my favour as well and I'll be able to pick up a bargain to work on over winter and then have ready to compete in Spring.

Best time of year to buy imho. 'specially if you are keeping for life. Best price and the winter to get to know each other before getting out to some serious competitions... I've bought all of my horses but one in autumn (and the one i didn't I didn't actually buy but was given...)

Bought our Fjord in the middle of November one year. He was the dirtiest hairiest thing you have ever seen but.......there was something about him that caught my eye and have never regretted buying him. Had him almost 7 years now and he is one in a billion! So laid back he's almost horizontal but excels at dressage. Unfotunately he has been recently diagnosed with a DDFT in his left hind so he's out of action for a while till we sort him out.
Its a good time of year to buy.

I bought my new boy two weeks ago. I'm glad it wasn't later in the year as he's a newly backed four year old so I want to get plenty done with him before the clocks change, the weather gets disastrous and riding gets very limited, so hopefully we'll be well ready to get on with stuff next spring. :)

I don't think buying mid-winter would be ideal, thinking how hard it is to keep consistent work and turnout. Trying to get to know a new horse last winter would have been hell. One poor woman on our yard bought a new four year old about ten days before the first freezing spell. I suppose if you have an indoor or access to 24 all weather turnout it would be easier, and if you are buying a more established horse, needing consistent work might be less of a problem, but it would still be tricky at our yard.

I always seem to buy my horses in the autumm. If I am buying a foal then its autumn when they are ready at weaning and at the moment its a cracking time to buy as lots for sale and prices very low due to recession and hay shortage. Happy hunting and hope you have something by christmas, nice present.:)

Yep.... I seem to collect mine in cold weather!! :D

In horse order -

November
October
March (still cold)
September
May (exception!)
Deposit currently on weanling who will join us end November!
