Anyone bought from Appleby? What happens to horses left at the end?

Hi,
with Appleby Fair looming, i am considering going up with the box. I have been after a nice coloured cob for a while and i guess it may be the place to go!
So, has anyone bought from up their before? Can i expect them to have some form of passport?
I know i am taking a risk if they have been stolen, but it would be my intention to check stolen horse records when i returned home, have him/her checked for a microchip etc.

Also, i seem to recall reading on here about the sad case of the horses left behind after the fair? what happens to these? I am more so after a youngster but would quite happily take on an older rescue case or two as i have the facilities that would allow me to do this.

Any advice would be great.

(i have been a visitor at Appleby for many years, have previously enquired about a few that were for sale but i have never been up with the box etc.)

becareful, also dont expect them to cheap, weve bought from appleby a few times, only because i desperately wanted to get a horse out of a situation (OH has now banned me from going!), i dont want to tar everyone with the same brush, but what you get told about a horse is not necessarily true ie background etc, i know someone who came home with a pony in its late twentys and was sold as a 8 year old!, dont expect to get a passport unless theyre from one of the many dealers that go their, who should legally have passports (dont count on it), ive never come across the horses been left, what a shame, i know the meat man used to go their and mark the horses with a star who hed bought for meat so maybe they go to him?

i recall reading something on here that some get left, i think its a member who is something to do with the RSPCA?

I actually think it could be quite comical what they 'claim' about some horses.

I do actually own a mare who went to Appleby with her previous owner a good few years back, she is a diamond. they ended up bringing her home but she was a special mare to them.

Do you have any gypsy's near you? I bought my first lad as a yearling from a local (settled) gypsy he was still with his mother (she had a foal at foot) he was unhandled and turned out to be a real bargain at £250

We have quite a lot around here, however, they tend to buy from the local auctions, and then sell on to local riders. They dont tend to have 'traditional' cobs.

i've just recalled since posting one of the auctions i went to just after Appleby, there was a guy there selling maybe 15 that he had just got from appleby, they were nothing special and i assume he bought up what was left? I may just have to go up with the box and see maybe? Am i correct in thinking it ends on the wednesday?

I used to look after a mans horse for him and he came back with beautiful horses from Appelby every year. All of them were right bargains and I loved them more than my own horses

. He had the banter to get a good deal though, and knew what he was talking about.

Many from Appelby will take your eyes out if they see your gullible.

i know i have always visited on the sunday, except when i had to return a harness to one of the stalls as she had given me the wrong size by accident. I returned on the tuesday from memory and it was still quite busy.

i would def say you have to have the gift of the gab! And also, if you go dressed in horsey gear, the prices will go up

We bought a lovely riding 3 yo from Appleby two years ago - couldn't leave her there. Skewbald traditional cob, no passport, footsore (LGL) ... She had a very late foal that summer, which was a lovely healthy coloured filly, and is now a healthy rising 5 yo.

Eyes wide open I would say, the people that go to appleby generally love their coloured cobs so any that are quality will generally be snapped up within the dealers themselves - i guess getting a youngster would be ideal however dont forget they break these ponies to cart at a very early age. I wouldnt say a good coloured cob wouldn't be cheap so probably wouldnt expect a bargain!
I've been once and will never waste my time going again
