My mare has just had a tenoscopy and gets stitches taken out tomorrow. She then starts her controlled walking, starting with 5 mins twice a day. My yard skip her out etc in the morning so I will be paying them to do controlled walking in the morning during the week. Is it possible to claim from insurance company for this as it is an essential part of her rehab? My policy says I have £1000 worth of complementary treatment ie physio etc. Just wondered what people have claimed for during rehab?

About 10 years ago our lad needed walking 10 minutes a day building up to 40 minutes in 2 x 20 minute sessions twice a day. He had had 4 months boxrest and was very very difficult to manage so I sent him to a rehab yard. The insurance paid for "use of the horsewalker" but not his livery. The yard carefully billed me for a very expensive horsewalker and a very cheap livery. The insurance never questioned it and paid out the fee as part of his therapy.

Ask your insurance company as they are probably all different but mine was brilliant and just needed a note from the vet confirming this was what was needed and invoices from the yard.

Thanks for reply! Which insurance company was it? I have emailed then to ask but no reply yet. I will try and call them one evening after work to ask. Mine doesn't cover livery either but that doesn't bother me as yard are only charging me £2.50 in am to skip out, chuck in hay and do water. Luckily my mare is very clean too so not much extra bedding needed! The controlled walking is going to cost me £5 a day so that is quickly going to build up so would be great to get that back from insurance! Luckily my yard specialises in rehab so I am defiantly in the right place!

I'm with Shearwater and can claim for up to £750 which I've spent in the first three months ! My mare had ligament complications following a fractured pedal bone and Liverpool recommended ten minutes walking a day on a flat surface which wasn't possible at her normal yard so she went to a specialist rehab yard.

They split the invoice for me to be able to claim for the element of rehab and my insurance company also needed a letter from the vet recommending the treatment.
