I just got a ticket for this ride in September, am very excited! I've done the West Linton and Penicuik rideouts before but never this one. Has anyone ever done this ride? What's it like? I know it's quite long so will be working hard on my boys' fitness over the next 3 months!

I did it last year and have a place for this year. Although it is a fairly long day, the ride itself isn't that long or tiring - the morning is mostly bombing around the stubble fields on the Drum estate, and then there is a long break for lunch. The afternoon is pretty much just walking with lots of waiting about.

At least one of the Edinburgh RS's provide horses for the day, including transport there and back. You can try the horses out to find the right one too. Might be worth a squirt! I've always fancied one of the Common Ridings, but don't know enough about what the day involves apart from riding and being decently turned out!

I did this last year as well and whilst it was fun I wont be doing it again I dont think.

The end was too tedious and long with all the waiting about, the gallops at the beginning were fun and if I were to go back I think I would have headed home after the lunch break being truthful :)

Mind you my mare was on one last year and I didnt get a minutes peace from beginning to end with her bouncing and taking off  I think it would be too much waiting about for baby pony :)

First half is hard on the horses unless fit: lot of galloping. Ok if the grounds good, not great if it's been wet. And there is LOT of horses with plenty of novices with little control so you need a sensible horse.

Second half is easy but lots of standing about: fine if your horse stands!

I've got a place this year but may miss out the first half if pony isn't really fit.

I wouldn't ever hire a horse from the Edinburgh riding schools for any of the ride outs... Some people do to save their own horses but IMO if you either get a total plod, or they put you on something you argue with the whole way round which takes the fun out of it. And it's expensive!

Plus, I've seem these horses with their saddles off during common ride season.... And thats all I'm saying.

i did it last year and although i'm pleased i did i will not be gong back

half the riders can't ride and cant control their horses - and also do not understand what a red ribbon on a tail is - i spent 90% of my time telling people to back off from my mare's derrier and they either a) ignored me b) couldnt ride enough to back away

maybe i'm too used to hunting with the known etiquette etc - but i would not risk my horse again there i'm afraid - she's too precious to me and the risk of someone running into her arse end was too high for me to enjoy it

al be there watching as stay just up from hollyrood but i would agree with the numpty riders and the bit about riding schools seen one horse in the vid that i know is nearing 30 and is buted up to its eye balls just to go on these rides from a local riding school
