Before anyone tells me it was all my fault, I was stupid, didn't pull my horse up quickly enough etc. I know.

Three of us were on a hack and we were cantering up a track, I could see the end of the track ahead so began to check the speed of the mare I was riding. She didn't respond so I gave stronger aids and she slowed down, unfortunately not soon enough.

Her muzzle touched the rump of the horse in front and I saw him begin to react so tried to back her up. He tried to double-barrel her but his hooves went under her neck (thankfully!!) but one hoof caught me square on the front of my shin.

Skin isn't broken, I can bend my toes and walking isn't an issue, so I'm not concerned.

What do you use to treat the bruising? And has this happened to others??

Feeling like a bit of a numpty :o

Yes, I got kicked in the foot when I was about nine whilst riding a riding school pony.

Health and safety didn't exist then, and kids were scrambling everywhere on a narrow track waiting to canter. I've seen less tightly packed sardines!

My horse really dislikes one of the ponies, when out hacking my sister was on the pony and got too close- my horse kicked out and got her instead! luckily barefoot and she was wearing chaps so didn't cause much damage

It happened to me on an RCride I was leading! Right at the end of a ride suitable for LRs one of the teenagers let her mare come alongside mine, hers then kicked with a twist, caught my mare on the ribs and me on the calf. No lasting damage but no apology and the girl and her parents tried to blame my girl who stood like a rock!

On a hack last month a rock tried to attack my big wimpy tb as he went passed it. He sought solace in the arms of his fieldmate who promptly told him to man up with a boot to the ribs. She missed him and got me. I'm sad enough to have been pleased about this. She's barefoot so it wasn't too bad. Hope your shin heals quickly!

Yes, this happened to me right near the end of riding of the marches! We were going across a round about and there was no where for me to go ( amongst 100 horses ) and this horse pulled infront of me, my pony was fed up, nuzzled it, it kicked but its hoof met my shin, broke the skin, still have a scar and a sort of dint in my shin.

bruising wise I swear by arnica gel

You were lucky years ago I had to take friend to hospital who had been kicked in shin whilst riding, the kick snapped her shin bone (or whatever that bone is) I have never seen anyone look soooo grey, she was months in plaster. She had on thick chaps, it would have been even worse without them !

Hope it isn't too sore today

yes once out hunting. it was near the begining of the day and it was my horses first time so we were towards the back; we were waiting at the edge of a wide road for some traffic to go past, the as we were setting off a pony with a red rubbon in its tail started napping and running backwards and kicking out as its rider smacked it, i was no where near it to begin with and my horse wasnt mis behaving but couldnt get very far out of the way because there wasnt any where to go and it got me square on the anke. apparently it was my fault according to the owner because i shouldnt have been so near its back end! forgetting the fact that it acctually reversed into me! it was quite sore and it ached for a few days but i think the cold did a good job of numbing the pain!

I havent but my mare kicked my sister as we went past. Early days og owning her and we didnt have much in the way of breaks. She decided to.go past my sister then got a fright because chippy was behind her, kicked out and caught my sisters knee.

My friends little daughter, only 7 at the time was really badly hurt, terrible leg fracture. They were out hunting and walked past another horse, it lashed out.

Many years ago I got my horse kicked, my fault entirely, I got to close to the rear of a friends horse and got booted, caught my horse on the front of his cannon bone, deep cut, lots of blood and massive vets bill as it was Boxing Day!

My Clydesdale has been bad since she has had her foals, wears a red ribbon now when ridden at shows, and has a barrier put up behind her when tied up at shows.

Glad you weren't too damaged, it's tough to know how any horse will react until it happens. Some don't seem to mind being used as a buffer!

I got kicked smack in the middle of my right shin. Out hacking with my college lecturer, I was on her horse she was on a livery horse, we had been out for a while and were heading home riding on the grass verge which was wide enough for an HGV to drive down, I was sort of behind her to the left when I moved the horse I was riding to walk around a long drain cover, the concrete ones, and coming back into line where I was originally the horse my lecturer was on double barrelled out and caught me smack square on my shin with his left hind. The horse I was on reared, my eyes were streaming, seriously I hadn't felt pain like that before!! my lecturer asked me if I was ok as she heard it connect, Im not sure I managed to answer! WE got back to the yard and I had to be caught sliding off as at 17.2hh it was long way down with a potentially broken leg! Got me in to the office and sat down with my jods round my ankles and an ice pack on my shin, it had broken the skin and I have a fabulous shoe shaped scar and dent on my shin.....stupidly I never went to hospital but at 16 you never really think about later on in life do you?! Anyway, I have an area on my shin you could hold a lighter to , stick pins in it whatever, I cant feel it......Oops!

Happened to a friend of mine out hunting, kick smashed her knee completely. She was years in and out of hospital and lucky to keep her leg. She wasn't particularly close to the other horse, more alongside it than behind, but when it spun and kicked she was right at the wrong point and got it full blast.
Made me very paranoid about riding with others, I hate warm ups.

After reading all of these, I feel incredibly lucky!! I hope you all recovered as quickly as was possible! x

The skin wasn't broken and I'm walking okay, though I have a slight dent, a hoof shaped bruise and some swelling. I think the bag of peas that I defrosted on my leg last night helped a lot! Off I go to buy some arnica cream/gel...

I got kicked whilst on a pony at a riding school when I was about 11. The instructor told me not to be so soft as I wasn't bleeding and I could still move my foot. However I still have a dent in my shin and an area with no feeling over 40 years later.

I got kicked when I was 15 playing polo, just above me ankle. Nothing broken but to this day the area is completely numb and had a dent! It ruined any chance I had at lovely dainty ankles!

My sister had the same thing happen to her, unfortunately it was the pony I was riding that kicked her! It was along time before she stopped harping on about it!!

Yes right on the ankle. I remember thinking thank goodness it was me and not the horse that got kicked! I was more concerned to get my boot off before it became necessary to cut it off. Horse first, boot second, me third! Prioriities.

Both of my horses have kicked the same person when they have been out hacking with them, I wasn't there at the time so I don't know what has happened but I was assured on both occasions that it wasn't her fault and it was because both of my horses are out of control nutters.

Yes this happens a lot more than you think. Its just one of those things someones brain isn't in full gear etc. etc. and whallop. If your skin isn't broken i'd just put some arnica gel on (i usually use the horses) or aloe vera, failing that a bag of frozen peas to bring out the swelling.

Hi OP sorry to hear about your kick, it is very common to get kicked when mounted. Try putting Witch Hazel on it and even soaking some cotton wool in Witch Hazel and holding there, it will bring out the bruising and help to stop the pain. I use it for everything, stings, knocks etc its marvellous. Hope you heal quickly.
