hey guys not sure if iv told you actually, I came off mildred...well she fell over and I borke my collar bone, badly infact I now have a metal plate & 7 pins in my shoulder.

has anyone had this done?
only iv followed my doctors advice and diddnt ride for 6-8 weeks
and on going back to the hospital theyasked me not to ride for another 3 months which would be 6 months in total.

so I protested and he laughed and said I could ride as long as I promised not to fall off! lol

so I am riding but only light hacking in walk but I feel really guilty

so anyone else suffered similar?

Ouch!

My daughter fell off the middle of a see saw about 4 yrs ago and cant wear a bp without it hurting as she has a lump where hers mened

A girl on the yard broke heres badly not pined, and could not ride to her old standard for about 6 months. They seem to be a long time healing

Good Luck

yeah, mine was too far apart to bring the bone together again so had to be fixed.
funny thought that ment it healed quicker, the choice is normally lump or scar! lol

Hi Carmenlucy,

I can honestly say that I've got an X-ray almost identical to yours. I fell and broke my clavicle must be 6 or 7 years ago now. I was trying out a horse for a friend, it reared, I thought "I can sit a rear" but the horse reared so high it carried on over backwards and I stayed on so long that both horse and I were upside down before I fell, driving my shoulder directly onto the ground.

The pain was excruciating - I can completely, totally and utterly sympathise with you CL. I've currently got my lower leg in plaster after breaking the fibula in another fall - (and yet another metal plate) - but believe me. breaking the fibula was nowhere near as painful as breaking the clavicle. Apparently, clavicles are one of the most painful bones to break. CL I really do feel for you.

Anyway, what I wanted to say - and I don't want to put the fear of God into you now, so apologies for this - is that when my consultant put the plate into my clavicle, he too recommended that I didn't ride (he knew damn well that I was going to ride, but I can understand that he has to cover himself and advise me not to). This wasn't just for a recovery period, though - it was for minimum 2 years. The reason being is that if you fall and break your collar bone again, it'll break again and so be it. But if you fall with the metal plate in, the plate won't break - instead it could potentially buckle and sever the sub-clavian artery which runs just underneath the collarbone and is one of the bodies' major arterys.

My consultant recommended that if I wanted to ride safely, that I wait a minimum of 2 years and then have the metal plate removed (which I did, luckily having some BUPA insurance to pay for it). So, if you happen to have something like BUPA, it may be worth investigating having the plate removed in a couple of years' time as a safety precaution.

As for actual riding. When I first did my clavicle, it was on the August Bank Holiday weekend. I got back on a horse again the weekend before Christmas (an early Christmas present) and despite the consultant's advice, I never stopped riding since (except to have the plate removed, and of course at the moment because this time it's my leg that's pinned and plastered!).

To try and cheer you up a bit now CL, after my depressing info, I can honestly say that now you've had the op, it shouldn't be too painful any more. So please don't despair. You will get the occasional twinge, and it will ache a bit, but the worst is now a long way behind you.

You may find that once its healed that there's a slightly tingly patch of skin immediately above where the metal plate lies, that's because of the plate blocking some of the nerve sensations - but even that gets less over time and as long as you remain fairly active, and stick to the physio exercises, you should almost certainly regain full movement.

Please let us know how you get on - and let us know when you're back in the saddle again (with a great big ear-to-ear Cheshire cat grin on your face, like I did!).

Wishing you all the best,

Faro

I broke mine a couple of years ago and it was only when my new boy knockd me over that I discovered it had never healed properly. Its sort of joined by soft tissue not bone.

It hurst occassionally and its a very odd shape apart from that no probs.

I dont think I would be fit for a trapeze act or para gliding and it has ruined my chances of a career as a World class classical violinist but then I dont have any musical bones in my body never learnt the violin and I am scared of heights so what the heck!!

well I am light hacking but litterally just walking (with my body protector on) lol

thanks so much for all that info though it was interesting to read and i had no idea i had the option to have the plate removed! that would be nice!

thanks so much

Hi there, my son also broke his clavical in 2 places a month ago. The bone was actually protruding the skin and pointing towards his ear! (sorry if that makes you feel ill). He did it whilst doing motocross (v.dangerous, much rather ride horses!).
Anyhow, he was pinned and plated and has been told no contact sport for at least 3 months! Poor sod he's on school holidays too( thank god for xbox live!!

Yea broke mine 5 years ago came off, well bucked off his lordship, 2 days after I bought him first ride out, didn't have pins just got a lump, didn't work for 4 weeks and then only light work, didn't ride for 9 weeks

, they then offered me an operation to which I said no thanks as they should have offered me one at the begining

, I will live with the pain, doesn't really bother me now unless try to do something at funny angle, doesn't bother me when wearing a body protecter either.

Hi - I am currently recovering from surgery.

I broke my collar bone on Wednesday, February 18th this year. Visited A & E and the x-ray showed two breaks but the bone was aligned perfectly. Put me in a cotton sling. Very painful couple of nights then on the Saturday morning I tried getting out of bed and as I pushed myself up with my good arm the bed rolled (I have a water bed) and the pain was excrutiating. Turns out the bone moved so now it was looking like Tower Bridge with one half open.

I lost over a week, high as a kite on painkillers but weaned myself off of them, suffering cold turkey too (Tramadol is good but evil). Allergic reactions to meds, several anaphalactic shock scares and losing well over a stone in weight.

In a sling for 9 weeks and the bone got futher and further apart so had my operation to plate it on April 21st. I have been extremely slow to heal and when I visited the consultant last week we could clearly still see the break, although he did say there was some bone growth but not much and thats a good three months post op.

I have asked when I can ride and have been told not to contemplate riding until at least end of October but am of the same opinion as above poster, if I fall whilst having the plate in the damage could be very, very serious and have been told I really shouldn't.

I am tempted to ride but do not want to risk further injury (I don't like pain) plus I have lost my confidence somewhat so when I do get on I want to know I have all the strength in my arm I can possibly have, considering, in case he plays me up.

I am due to see my consultant in another three months and then I will discuss having the plate out but I think it has to be in for a minimum of one year.

I am still very uncomfortable in my shoulder and my movements are restricted. I did some physio at the hospital a couple of weeks ago and it was far, far too much. Physio had me lifting 2kg weights, repititions and it pulled my scar and my bone and I feel like I have gone backwards so far as recovery is concerned.

Considering I was told it would be about six weeks and then back to normal it is now almost six months and I am still crocked. I can now drive but get sore and I get very, very tired and yet don't seem to be doing much.

I got very upset last week when I visited my boy. I wanted to give him a really good groom and fussing and couldn't even manage that. I had no strength in my arm to give him a good going over and couldn't raise my arm high enough to brush his mane or forelock. I gave up in the end.

I am getting better daily but it is slow and some days are better than others. One day I can lift the barrow when I've picked some poo, another day and I can't.

I really hope you make a swift recovery but don't rush things. You have a lifetime ahead of you for riding so take things slowly and I guess do things when you feel you are ready, not when you expect to be able to do things (if that makes sense).

yeah i did- with the bone sticking out of my body bit too. its healed fine and the only way to tell is a litle lump and it gets achy in dodgy weather. Now the real special one was the dislocated knee cap!!!! that was mad. i was v cheeky a rode ridiculously long so i didnt flex it and rode far to early but hey ho.
