I only have Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 and I spend apprx £120pm on petrol already - 40 miles min a day, 20miles each way to park car at train station nearest the yard (2 hour walk otherwise so no alternative) then on the train to work in the city - and I drive as slowly as I can lol. tesco's now 112pl and I'm so worried about it going up ! Anyone else in the same boat?

yep, I have a 42 mile round trip to work and back and I am struggling. TBH Im not sure how the hell Im going to get to work after this week until I get paid again after an expensive month (and it is only the 6th!). It is just getting harder and harder to keep the car on the road. We are in the middle of nowhere so have an hours walk to the nearest public transport which would cost me even more than the car as it is across the transport co boundary so costs a fortune.

Yep i'm a student at uni but keep myhorse at a yard off campus. As a student I have severely limited funds anyway - i only have a ford ka but i'm seriously struggling to afford to run her!

I think a lot of people are in the same boat, Im running a 4x4 and would sell it, but its been devalued so much by high fuel prices I doubt anyone would buy it. If i did sell i would have to sell the trailer as well, as there would be no point in keeping it, so that would in turn be an end to our hobby. what realy makes my blood boil is the fact that the oil companys are making such high profits, and high tax levied by goverment.......grrrrrrrrrr when will it end?

Hilary Clinton wants the oil companies in the US to pay for a tax increase which seems like a good idea.
I find it strange that when diesel hit the £1 per litre mark the hauliers went mad with blockades and said they will not be able to continue if it went much higher. I have seen it at 1.30 per litre (30% increase) and nothing???

Driving up and down the A1 the last few weeks, I am amazed how many equine related vehicles are on the road.

Me too. I only drive a 1.4 petrol and have gone from £35 per week petrol to £45-50. Its scary how quickly it is going up. I'd convert it to LPG if I could afford the conversion and knew for certain I'd be able to find a fuel station to refuel wherever I was

Forgot to say, I had a response to a petition I'd signed ages ago about relief from fuel duty - the government's response was basically along the lines of shut up whinging, it rises in line with inflation, what the oil companies charge is up to them and we gave you 6 months before implimenting the 2p per litre rise this year what more do you want

when it went over the £1 litre it was the point of no return, it will never go back down . It was the same when it went to £1 Gallon, all those years ago. They tried for ages to push it over but none of the oil companies wanted to be the one to do it so they stuck at 99.9 for months. Once it goes over the 'magic number' the price will just continue to rise until they get to the next one (scary thought £2/litre!!) I worked for one of the major oil companies for 18 years and know how they work. Diesel engines and used chip fat sound very tempting at the moment!!

I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't for doing the horse..very worrying

I'm scared it'll get to the point of having to move her or myself to shorten the distance which is extreme, I am one for imagining the worst! £120 + pm on fuel alone is bad enough.

I expect fuel protests soon unless something is done about it but this gov. views motorists as cash cows to milk of everything with parking fines, traffic cameras, congestion charge, road pricing proposals, etc etc

the problem is that joe motorist cannot go on strike to protest and have any effect at all so nothing will happen and the oil companies will carry on getting richer as we get poorer

although as a side effect if we all started to walk to our local shops instead of driving to the out of town supermarkets then tescos, etc would soon 'protest' on our behalf

so how about a week long boycott of all supermarkets we have to drive to?

Yes, I've converted my car to LPG because within 2 years, you recoup your initial costs and your road tax is less.

I've always been quite puzzled with by the logic that if you raise the fuel prices incredibly high, people will stop using their cars. In my experience, people rarely fill up their tank and think 'wow, that's incredibly expensive (£70), I must drive less'. I think people put in £25 and just keep driving until it runs out. Incidentally, I would really love to use public transport but in Cambridge, it's actually run by a private company and works out more expensive than driving!! Logic - I think not!

kit279 - that's pure government whitewash - like alcohol and cigarettes, they know that they can keep raising the tax just below our tolerance thresholds without affecting the amount we buy, claiming that they are doing it for the good of our health/the environment.

In reality each incremental change is too small to tip the scales. If they really wanted us to buy less petrol they'd heavily subsidise conversions to green fuels and put a massive step change - say 40p per litre - extra tax on petrol.

Will they ever do that? Of course not, it would mean a massive loss in Government income, and they like their luxury second homes just too much

(sorry that last comment was a tad bitchy

YES! its getting stupid. and then theres the tax going up to £300 next yr then £455 the yr after for my landrover. i'm going to sell it and my IW trailer. i just cant afford to go on like this.

I live in a rural area nearest local shop is six mile away so is local school, costing me £5.00 a day just to get the kids to school and back, soon i wont be able to afford that.

Get a horse and cart Quickfire!!

Seriously, how can anyone NOT be affected?

lol you joke about it, i've already thought about it, told the children they can double up on the pony and tie it up in the bike sheds for the day, but would have the rspca on my back!! Would love to do it to prove a point

I've already changed my car, after 26 years of Range Rovers I have downgraded to a Freelander, had the engine mapped and am appreciating the better mileage.
I think twice before using the horsebox, and my daughter sleeps in her boss' box some nights to avoid the 30 plus mile trip home.
Living here you have no choice but to drive, the nearest village is a mile and a half away up a really steep hill, tesco's is 15 miles, and others even further.
My husband has started putting oil in his tank to save money which seems to be working ok.
It's all very well the government saying use public transport, but we have around four buses a day through the village and the last one leaves the local market town at 2pm to get back home..
I think I might go back to a pony and trap.

henryhorn, if you turn left out of your drive, there should still be a couple of traps at the bungalow where Mr L lived, unless they've been sold off!

As a feed merchant, we are still delivering for free, but it does make me wonder where some people are in their heads, I had a man ring today asking me to deliver one bag of Molli Extra - doh, it will cost substantially more to deliver one bag than we would make on profit, and that's just fuel versus profit, let alone time (sure, off on a rant again...)

Eee eck...just read this and wishing I had a fuel bill of £120pm!

Affects us all in one way or another...in a 18 months I've seen my fuel bill double to over £225 a WEEK!....
Result.....the costs get passed on to customers and clients...it's the only way to survive it.
The higher it goes, the more peeps will struggle...more and more will find it worthwhile quitting employment and taking benefits....more businesses will close down, prices on everything will keep on increasing.....it's just the new way of life....and we have to accept that by voting in the government of today...we are the one's responsible for our own demise!!

yep mine doubled, but thats because of going home at lunchtime to walk the dog! - other than that walk most places I can...although its quite ruralish where we are. OH uses motorbike or work van, so we snip a bit of cost there.

On a good month we spend £400pm on fuel going to and from work, bad months it's just shy of £500

If it doesn't improve or I don't earn more ponio might have to find a new home for the winter

I have recently solved a little of my fuel problems, i think. I have bought a second hand 50 cc scooter to go to and from the horses and work - luckily both are local to my home. I only use my 4x4 now for towing to rallies and events im saving about £30 a week i cant believe the difference

I think it quiet scary that our leader does not even know how much it costs the ave family to fill up now. All he could do was harp on about the price of oil. Nothing like side stepping a direct question.

i drive a 1.8 petrol which when i started driving it cost me about £42/45 to fill right up....that was only 18mnths ago.....its now costing me £56+to fill up. I am now starting a job which is a 40mile round trip 4 days a week...obviously plus other trips. I will drive a bit for my job and am getting 40p a mile which is more than where i was getting 25p a mile!! but surely this should increase too??

I reckon its easily going to cost me 150 a month if not 200 and when i am only really earning not far off min wage it doesnt exactly leave much for me. Its a good job i do not have bills/rent/mortgage to worry about of i would not survive

Buy a Toyota Aygo - I did and its cheap as chips to run, insure and tax is £36 a year!!! I used to have a Peugeot 206 2.0 convertible, nice car but it ate fuel like it was going out of fashion ( which is will be soon!) I also sold my lorry and bought a trailer which m dad pulls with his 4x4.
