my shetland (who`s 24 and never a day ill)and cob get some every day.
they go in the orchard in the autumn for short spells for the windfalls too.no probs here.

we lost a good up and coming event horse to colic within a matter of 2 hrs and the only thing we can put it down to was windfall cooking apples and it was August time. she was in sooo much pain she could not even stand to go into lorry to go to Newmarket let alone be operated on. a harrowing experience and she was pumped with everything the vet (royal stud vet and excellent) could give her but to no avail.

had been thinking about asking same as have avoided giving mine these for years, but wondered whether half a chopped apple in with feed could do any harm. As apposed to allowing horses to eat windfalls ad lib, I mean.

Can't think that would do any harm

Well mine go in the paddock which has cooking apples on3 trees and pears on another. They are not bothered about the cookers but it is a race if the pears fall as to who gets there first me or one of them

Agree with this.

I was always told cooking apples can cause colic but mine has had the odd one in the past with no problems, but he never had more than one apple split between two feeds.

Feeding them in large quantities i would be very wary of.
