Anyone else find galloping scary??

I thought that I had we had galloped before but today proved to me that she had never been flat out before and OMG it scared the life out of me!!!

My friend and I went out for a lovely hack and after a nice canter we decided to head for the gallops for another little canter hhhmmmmm the horses had other ideas! My friend had warned me that her horse may try and go and we agreed that we would just let them go for it if they wanted to. Her horse shot off like a bullet and Cropi bombed off in hot pursuit, she lowered her suspension to about 14h and went like a rocket!!! I was fine until that dreaded thought popped into my head 'what if I fall off at this speed'!!! then I realised that I was in fact scared and really wanted to slow up a bit

We pulled up ok and I was laughing/smiling/shaking I could not believe that Cropi could go that fast, it was amazing.........but I'm not sure I'll be repeating it on a regular basis though

Glad I can now say that we have had a proper gallop though!

Really scary...its good fun as long as they dont put in a sudden 'oh my god whats that' leap to the side like my mare did once! God knows how I stayed on

I love it once we are going but she almost always throws a few huge bucks as she goes into gallop, kind of takes the edge off it if you have to adopt limpet mode in anticipation. That said I love how fast it is. Whoever thinks that cobs can't move should see Daisy go when she feels she has been left behind by someone else. She won't gallop out front but she's like a bullet out of a gun if someone else is in front and woe betide any horse that tries to overtake.

Any tips on how to discourage bucking on the transition?
 
I find it scary because I imagine all sorts happening..... legs down holes, tripping etc. Not helped by the fact that when Merlin gallops (not often) you cannot stop him to save your life and his nose is always about 2" above ground level

Only time I have ever enjoyed it is when we went on Hamptons sponsored ride and went round the proper gallops (think it was there) and I could push him on to bring his head up..... boy did I push that day, he was really confused that I was pushing not pulling

I think exactly the same bad thoughts! Sometimes bear goes really bouncy in the gallop, I don't think his legs will move as fast as he wants them to! Im OK when im behind, I dont like taking the lead cos he can spook at silly things like plants!!
I love galloping when I know I can slow up gently unlike my friend's fearless 12 yr old daughter, who just stops!!

My retired boy D, he is 16.2hh and he used to go down to the height of a 13hh pony and OMG could he shift

We used to start off behind my friends mare but we'd always end up at the top of the gallop track first

TBH, a gallop on a Tinkers Pony or a NF isnt quite as exhilerating as a good gallop on a TB...But exciting the same!!!

Crop seemed to love it though, she was certainly very tired on the way home though

I exercise racers 6 mornings a week, we rarely properly gallop intentionally but I ride a few who do just piss off with you and theres nothing you can do about it apart from wait for them to stop but it is the most amazing feeling!!!!
It does get a bit nerve wracking when we do it on grass and its a bit muddy though.
 
I dont mind galloping slightly uphill, on the flat and downhill, ooeeeerrrrr, I tend to worry about the what if's, tripping potholes pigeons ect, plus his head goes down and his back comes up so nothing in front of you

I'm not sure I agree. My first ever gallop was on an ex point to pointer, very talented in her day but she was so neat about it all that while it was undoubtedly faster than D it wasn't the same adrenalin rush.

The kick from galloping Daisy comes from the slight doubt that all her legs are moving in the same direction and still under her control. It works but its not pretty or refined. What she lacks in style she makes up for in enthusiasm. I don't have a cob because I need one to carry my weight, I could ride a TB but I like the feeling that there is something "there" as she thunders along beneath me. Give me a "leg at each corner" type over a TB any day
 
I think that because its the first time I have galloped properly it was more scary if you know what I mean. I know that next time (if I'm brave enough!) I'll let her go rather than trying to slow her down (because it just wasn't happening!!) and relax a little more. Also I'll try and stay on the track

We are lucky that the gallops are really well looked after and only a short way from us

I was sort of ok until I had the 'what if I come off at this speed' thought...........that was when my bottle went. There was no way I was sitting to the gallop, it was standing all the way!!
 
I really enjoy a good gallop, however, only if it is in a safe place, and I am prepared before we set off!

There is nothing worse than being unprepared. Have you tried putting your stirrups up a couple of holes as if for jumping? I find this helps as I can get out of the saddle better, and am less likely to lose a stirrup if the unexpected happens.

Try it again, you might find it addictive!!

The fastest I have been in on an ex pointer TB, made my eyes water, even with glasses!

Problem was we were side by side so they just raced. We started off behind but somehow (my fault) we ended up next to each other

There was no need to kick on at all!!
 
My old Tb used to do the lowered suspension thin when he galloped, i loved it, he couldnt half shift!
My boy now is part shire, but for a big lad he still goes some! His gallop is amazing, it feels so effortless! Even better when theres a nice log to jump!
Just try not to think of the things that could go wrong, but the nice feeling of thundering along!
 
NO WAY!!!!

I love it my old exracer was the best he was 16.2 but when he galloped he was more like a 12.2 lol!! And he used to cover so much ground in one stride!!!
 
When I properly go for a blast I cannot see - tears are just streaming off my face - I love it!!! When I was staying on Oxfordshire for a couple of days, we really, really went for it the moment we hit a stubble field - Little 15hh Chloe kept up with her 18hh hunter friend!!! I almost forgot to breathe it was so much fun.

I galloped today, and my friend's horse got a bit too excited and bolted, then bucked, unseated her and she was galloping with no stirrups for about a quarter of a mile and then she fell off

She got knocked unconscious and had to go to hospital, I hope she's ok.

I get scared of falling off at a gallop, especially now. At least my horse is well behaved, so I can stop him whenever I want.
