Sorry bit of a whinge but a bit peed off tonight.
I have a young horse who is in the process of being backed by me.
Up until now I have let others in the arena when lunging him but tbh its not working as he naps a bit and I don't think it is conducive to his education.
Anyway I thought I would book the arena for 45mins for 4 consecutive days just to get going a bit.
Tonight livery yard owner has told me I'm not allowed to do this at the same time each night as it might tick the other liveries off!
We have an open booking policy - first come first served. If its not booked then all can use.
All I want is 45mins undisturbed schooling - is this too much to ask?!

Yes, I HATE IT. I don't think anyone should be able to book it for anything other than lessons. Everyone is an adult, and is capeable of sharing especially if they compete.

If you want it to yourself, go up earlier or later, thats what I do and 99% of the time get it to myself, but I don't care about sharing.

My horse is also just about the hottest on the yard.

Think there was a huuge post on this the other day, most people thought likewise!!

IMO the school should be booked for just lessons, saddlers/ vettings etc or views to sale.

Used to get very annoyed at old yard as people wouldn't ask if you minded sharing- and my youngster was always nappy. If another horse finished and went out then there was no point me even trying to continue.

I'd maybe try to book every other day or at slightly different times though as know I find it frustrating when somebody books the school at the same time every night.

I think I have booked arena 3 times in past 2yrs so don;t think I have over stepped the mark at all.
Unfortunately alot of the people who use our arena are not that sensible and when you are trying to long rein a young horse it is very difficult to be watching out for everyone else!
Sorry - bit of a rant. I can see how others need to use it but I would have though a little bit of consideration wouldn't go amiss -its only for 4 days.
Unfortunately our arena is in use from 6am - 11am and from about 5pm - 7.30pm most days. If he wasn't being backed then I am more than happy to share any other time

We have two arenas and a round pen, so it might be somewhat different here than for you, but if I am lunging, I obviously use the round pen. Others will insist on booking the big school for an hour to lunge in one corner - In my eyes, why not use the round pen!? It is enourmous!

We also have a woman who books one school for her, and one for her daughter.

Having said that, I can't ride until 7pm anyway what with work etc, but even so, when I back my baby, I will just do it in the mornings (5.45am I get there!! YAWN!!!!) or later at night - sometimes I have tea before going to the yard to gaurentee getting the arenas to myself.

Maybe I will have to start at 5am or 8pm instead then......
Just thought that other people on our yard could show some flexibility or understanding for a few days - boy was I wrong!

we have a booking system at my yard...when i first moved there i was worried about it as was used to arena being totally free unless having a lesson...but to be honest i prefer it

there are 50 horses on my yard and hardly any arguments about the school. we have a system of half hour slots with 2 slots in every half an hour (so 2 people share) but if having a lesson or on a youngster you can have both slots...on my old yard there was only 10 people and we used to argue all the time!

i have to say to OP i would be annoyed if someone booked the school at the same time every night. there are a couple of people who do that on my yard and TBH i think its a bit selfish.

with my horse i like to ride for longer than half an hour but don't feel its fair to book 2 slots in 'prime time' (i.e. between 5 and 7) so i tend to ride 7.30-8.30pm when everyone goes home. it would be easier for me to ride at half 5 straight after work but i try to be fair on everyone else...i do think maybe you should try to go up at varied times OP if you want the place to yourself....

Did you speak to them before booking to explain? Or did they just turn up to find they couldn't use the school at that time for a week? Understanding can only come from explanation.

It could be worse, you could be at my yard. We have a YO who, unless you've booked the school 24 hours in advance keeps it locked ! She has various reasons but it's mostly so she doesn't lose out on the £1 / hour forl ights she charges

Personally, I'd be ticked off at you too

I think it would be fine if you'd booked it once or twice, but consecutive nights is unfair on everyone else. So I can completely see why the Y/O wanted you to put a stop to it.
there has to be compramise, yep, you've got a young horse you want to back but others have just as important things to do with their horses.
Talk to the other liveries and ask them next time, and they'll probably be fine with it if they know your situation and they're aware of it.

BayJosie speaks a lot of sense! I'm sure if you were to vary the times, no one would have an issue. We have a board for booking slots in the school at the yard I'm at and one of the side notes asks that people vary the times they are booking as it's not fair if the same person block books a "premium" time slot.

I don't finish work until 6pm, so never ride earlier than 7pm and luckily don't have too many issues with it being too busy.
