I certainly think so. They are also extremely energetic and lively. My current one is also a bit too clever for his own good and can open doors including the one on his cage (from the inside!) Can't fault the temperament on either of mine. Only downside is very vocal!
I've got one...ehh there nice dogs to look at...ehh...
Sorry struggling to be positive as mine is at the moment filthy and eating this weeks H&H which he says is rather yummy. (i get the feeling another large vets bills on the way lol)
But seriously they are like a drug (a very expensive one lol) once you have one you want another and you jut cant be angry at them as they are intellectualy superior...or so the books say. Brok is several sandwiches and a cake short of a picnic.lol
They run very fast come back after owner is in heart failure (ran out in front of tractor...dont gasp he was fine it was me who couldnt speak for once.
Are you thinking of getting one?
By the way if you want anymore horror stories let me no i could go on for ages.
Finally, if you do get one its a good idea to not mind paying vets bills (*frowns at dog choking on H&H). Thankfully i work at vets on a saturday so get on really well with them but they didnt appreciate the phone call at 7:30 yesterday moning to inform themthat eejit features had eaten rubber(for pencils)
Lifes certainly never dull with a vizsla thats for sure! How old is yours - my last one was a bit destructive as a pup but grew out of it. Never actually grew up totally though at all - people were still thinking she was a puppy up until a few weeks before she died. Current one is only year and a half. He's my best buddy but infuriating at times. Have him and a pointer - find if run off Vizsla is always nearby in some trees but selective deafness overcomes him so I think he is miles away and pointer actually is miles away!!! I know how you feel - start imagining them under cars etc then both come back with smiley faces and tongues lolling and say theyre ready to go home now! Actually vizsla is much better then this now but still loads of work to do on pointer!
My neighbours is a great dog! A bit ugly I reckon but so obedient! He'll wait at the end of the drive for them to come home-never wanders off down the village or whereever which he could easily! (Unlike my JRT!!). He's a wirehaired visla.
Yes both of my vizslas have been the smooth variety. They seem to have a different personality to the wires - wires seem more laid back! Is that your JRT in the photos - he looks really cute. I wish I could put some photos of my dogs/horses on but as a bit technically dim I don't seem to be able to do it!
I thought I'd never do it but it can be done!!! Are your photos uploaded onto your computer? If so its quite easy. Go to www.photobucket.com and open an account. Click browse and it'll bring up your photos. Choose the one you want and click on it and click on open. Once they're on photobucket you just click on the 3rd box down to highlight it, then right click and copy. Go to your post, right click and paste et voila!! Honestly, I'd never done it before and had to faff around a bit until my brain clicked!! Good Luck
sofjeh- im thinking thats the only obedient vizsla in the country.lol.
ann-jen. alas selective deafness brok has terminal selective deafness. y is it that they insist on greeting you like you have been away for years when in fact you have only gone for a cup of tea which ends up all over you when they say hello in their vizsla way (paws on shoulders and knock everything out your hands.)
I'm actually just about to pick mine up (and pointer friend) from my friends house as she's been looking after them while I've been away for a week. Not sure of the reception will get - might be a flying leap to greet me as does this when have just been out for 20 min at supermarket or more likely won't be bothered as friend has 30 dogs (yes 30!) so may not even want to come home! Any got to go as National about to start!
I have a three year old Vizla who is just lovely. She reckons that she is actually a person though and tries to get away with all sorts! She even has my Dad tucking her in at night and speaking to her for a few minutes before he turns out the light. If this little ritual isn't done properly then she gets up and barks until you do it right!
Mine is very obdient too, which is great. Throw a stick and she won't move until you tell her to 'get it'. She won't leave the house or garden unless told she can.
She can be quite fierce if unknown people come to the door, but as soon as she sees that my family chat to them she calms down.
My last one was brilliant at retrieving too but her real forte was scent retrieval. I used to take her to a training class which she loved - all the other dogs cloths were hidden under chairs or under other cloths but hers was put behind the stage in the front basket of a bicycle! She still found it within a few minutes - not sure what this says about me though!!
Current one does great sits and downs but haven't got much further than this with him. Pointer sits after about 5 min delay but is getting gist of this now (after 3 mths! - very nice but a bit dim bless her)
Never met a fierce vizsla - does she just bark a lot. I think previous vizsla would have invited burglers in and made them a cup of tea if she could. I think current one would protect house but this one is a dog so might be a man thing! Pointer would just run away!
Here is a piccie of current one when he was 6wks old -ahh and previous one as adult
If the door rings she'll bark away quite happily, but if someone comes in the door without my family being there, or if someone comes through the garden gate then she just goes nuts. Ears back, teeth bared, tail between the legs lots of barking and snarling. She'll do this quite close to the person without going for them, and I don't think she ever would try to, but she would easily corner a burgler!
sojeph - I'm shocked (haha)- how could you think your neighbours dog was ugly! I think he looks really cute!!!
Blackhawk, your dog is obviously of sterner stuff than either of mine! I've only ever heard them growl in play or occasionally when dreaming - presumably dreaming of being a big rottweiler or something! Yours obviously has more control than mine - Mine would greet people at door or potential muggers by jumping all over them - not very helpful if just about to go out on town or if have nice cream jodphurs on...........
LOL! No, she doesn't jump up. She won't go anywhere near people who come in, and just keeps barking and growling at them for about half an hour until she decides that they're allowed to be there! She has seen my OH many a time, but decides that she must 'initiate' him every time he go to see my family!
Shes fine with other dogs and kids though, it's just adults and always men that she'll do this to.
well blackhawk you must have the only guard vizsla around!!!
brok is very very easily bribed and sees bugglers as nice people who have come to feed him. mind you his size puts people off.
do your vizsla like going to vet ann-jen & blackhawk? Brok loves it think he might have a needle fetish. Even before i started working there he loved going, freak that he is.
what names do your vizslas answer to? Brok has severval....none of which are brok.lol
better go he is terroising the neighbours...just for a change.
Yep my vizsla would do the same as yours re the burglers dougie! He(Josh) might bark a bit in an excited whose come to the house type way first I suppose which first one (bracken) wouldn't even of bothered about. Pointer (daisy) would just run and hide. They have a multitude of "other names" too depending on what they are doing some of which probably can't be printed on this site!! Some soppy ones too which probably too embarassed to put on this site!
Dogs go to vets every day basically because I am a vet so not bothered about that really! I don't think Bracken would have been bothered if I wasn't - all those other dogs/people would have made a great day out. Josh is more of a wus (sp?) so think would be ok until on table then scared (like is when has bath - but then shouldn't roll in fox s**t....!) Pointer would def be scared.
Bracken was easy going with neighbours and allowed all cats/birds into garden. With Josh and Daisy it is now a cat (and grass - arrgh) free zone with regular patrols along fence to make sure nothing and noone gets in!
Anyway gotta go and let them out now -never know could be cats lurking somewhere.
Mine is called 'Meg'. She too loves the vet, which is good as she used to have to go quite a bit as she has a hereditary skin disease.
She thinks it's great fun!
She hates traffic though and cowers if you take her near our main village road. A country dog through and through!
I also find them very intelligent. Meg has learned quite a few words in her short life. 'walk' or 'walks' being one, so we thought we'd be clever and spell it. No, she knows that too. So we kept using different words. 'go out' 'take her out' 'go for a thing' 'exercise' and she knows them all, plus the sound of them being spelt. Thing is, she isn't taken straight out, usually 20 minutes or so later.
She also knows the sounds of 'cat' 'cats' 'squirrels' 'garden' and each of my fmailies names. Plus the usual 'sit' 'stay' 'beg' 'paw' 'speal' etc!
is meg a computerisied vizsla or was brok peeing on a lamp post when god was handing out intelligence??? im thinking the latter.lol
what kind of vet are you ann-jenn(small, large or equine)? im gonna aply for vet school in august
.
btw, do any of you use your vizslas as studs? i did think about using bok and then i thought...mmm...a litter of mini broks. Is anyone else thinking jekyll and hyde?????
At the moment am working in small animal practice but still do a fair amount of equine for friends! The number of people I work with that have horses is enough to keep you going! This is the first SA job I've had - have always been in mixed practice before or SA/equine but this one gives better QOL as less nights on call and so more time to spend with horse!
Alll my dogs have been neutered so no not used any at stud. Considered having a litter off Bracken before she was speyed but really wouldn't have had the time with working full time - litter of vizslas running round house while at work could be carnage! Think should have left Josh entire as is v handsome - mum wanted me to show him but again no time!
Yes my vizsla knows all the w words as well. I think he is very intelligent - which is why sometimes he knows how to make a fool of me! Bracken (last one) did quite good obedience but was just very exuberant about it! Josh is same -knows loads of commands - just sometimes chooses to ignore them! So lively that sometimes forgets training in excitement! The only real bugbear I've ever had with either of them is SO VOCAL! Bracken did it for attention really so tried really hard not to make same mistake with Josh but he barks at door, cats neighbours.... now has met Daisy even barks at birds! Very quiet at moment mind so better check what they're up to!!
Hi, I've got an eight month old bitch Vizsla and she is great. I'm totally addicted to them now. Think I'll always have a Vizsla. She is so obedient and loving. She tries to push her way onto the sofa if she can and curl up next to me with her head on my shoulder!! I also have a completely mad one and half year old jack russell, with a totally different personality, but they get on brilliantly together. (JRT is independent and Vizsla goes wherever her 'family' go). The only issue my Vizsla has is a fear of other dogs. Despite getting on great with my other dog she will be bark at strange dogs and if they come over she will run and hide. (When she was about 4 months old two springer spaniels came over and chased her out of the park - which might explain it!!).
