If so, can I see pictures, please? I just thought Kes was odd when I bought him, but it seems a bit more glamourous now I've been told the proper name for his colouration.

LOL, wasn't expecting a backside shot, though of course it is a key element. Kes has a lot of white hairs at the base of his tail.

Ticks 3 or 4 of the boxes, the white tail hairs, the roaning on the flank, the white lower lip (I did look into it when I was told about it). Lots of info on google.

That's really interesting - I'd never heard of it, and i've read quite a bit on colour. I've had one in the past now i know what it is!

I hadn't until I was told about it on here. It seems prevalent in arabs and welsh ponies (no doubt because of the arab influence).

Me - although I don't seem to have any very good pics! He is showing more roaning each year - this was him back in the "summer" :D Can't wait to see what we have when the current winter fur comes out!

What a lovely young pony.

Yours is clearly showing the classic traits, isn't he? It was actually you who told me mine was rabicano - I found the thread.

I was looking for a bum shot of mine, but don't seem to have one. His tail hairs are whiter in his winter coat, but his overall roaning is much stronger in the summer.

I have a black rabicano. She's jet black with white feathered stripes on her ribs and in the flank area. She has a mainly white tail (not flaxen like some of the pictures shown on this thread).

Edited to add; my mare is DNA tested EEaa

That is very interesting and a very interesting website. I always thought that my mares bum was roany- she is a skewbald cob- Recently when i clipped her Bum i noticed that she had random black patches which i thought was odd but since looking at that website i assume That they are old injuries.

I do notice her 'Roany bum' more with her winter coat than her summer coat.

This is her:

Rabicano, also known as skunk tail ;)

Googled image:

I have spotted, and striped, and splodgey horses but no rabicanos that I can think of.

I have a pure bred arab who is, also is sabiano. Funny thing is she's also developing birdcathcer spots. This is on a dark chestnut.

I think the general consensus is that sabino is roaning over much of the body, whereas rabicano is focussed around the quarters. But both have the white lower lip, white tail hairs and white splashes on the legs. From what I read online.

Mine has roaning that has become more pronounced every year and has ragged socks and even faint palm size spots on his bum along with white hairs through his mane and top of his tail :)
