My horse suffers with allergies badly and is on immune theraphy. I have struggled feeding him most foods make his lumps come up.

I changed him on to fast fibre off everything else and this feed works perfect for him, no allergies, working really well plenty of energy.

Problems is he has gone off it, starting with his breakfast for the last two weeks and now hes not touching his dinner. Hes a horse who loves food so its very unlike him but hes bot getting his supplement which he needs.

I dont know how to make it more tasty, any advice?

Could he have some mint added?

Can't suggest much else, mine have it mixed with Hifi Lite and Sugarbeet as a partial hay replacer, but probably not much use if yours can't eat those!

How much would you give an approx 420kg horse please?

According to Feedmark (though I don't buy from them now) ;)

Over 14hh - 1x Level 50ml scoop (which is apparently approx 30g)
Under 14hh - 1x Level 25ml scoop

I only give my 15.3hh cob mare 600kg approx the lower dose rate as that is enough to tempt her. :)

How old is he? If he is over 10 or 12 there's a possibility of Cushings. Don't worry, it's not a big issue nowadays. This is one of the first signs people notice, I would have him tested if only to rule it out.
Another suggestion feed wise, can he tolerate soya? Ready Fibre Mash is very good for fussy eaters and low in sugar and starch. I mix it with micronised linseed and my very fussy TB eater licks the bucket clean, even with Meta Balance, salt and extra copper and zinc added to the water and all mixed in to soak.
Good luck

Thanks for that I will get some to try, sounds like the miracle I need :D

I do find in changeable and wintry weather my oldie chap really does like his FF to be made up with warm not cold water - makes the difference between him eating the lot and leaving most of it. so def try that, it might be all thats needed. It soaks much more quickly and completely too so in total doesnt take much more time!

I have found with mine that he tips over his feed bucket over and picks all the bits he likes out and leaves the fast fibre, trouble is his supplements are mixed into the ff so not sure he's getting everything he should. I'm now trying a hanging bucket so he can't get it over. For me I think it looks a little boring when it goes dust like, I mix a bit of oil in mine to make it a bit tastier, seems to work!

Would it be possible for him to have grazeon or the like? If it is then maybe try adding some of that to the fast fibre, most horses will eat mixed in grass :)

Hi,

My horses have a scoop of Hoofkind mixed in with their fast fibre, which gives it a more open texture. They have up to 1.5 kg of fast fibre at a time depending on weather etc. Even with this much fast fibre the texture is a lot different with just .25 kg Hoofkind mixed in.

My three are all good doers and one is a potential laminitic. All barefoot and they do brilliantly on this mixture and have done for several years.

When we spoke to A&P when we couldn't get a horse to eat as was stressing on box rest, they suggested making it up with some apple juice - just basics and they go back on it. Hot water works too - my boy loves it with hot water - and he isn't a big lover of food, eats his hay first given the choice! :)

my unfussy horse went off hers, I've put mint in hers now :) I have found that she tends to pick at it whilst eating her hay and its gone by the morning, whereas my other welshie can't eat it fast enough.
