I'm having real trouble making myself go up the yard at the moment, I havent done any work with Buzz for weeks, he just goes out for a few hours everyday and looks a right scruff. When im there i get all the necessary things done as quick as possible so i can get home again.

Me too really having to try and motivate myself .We have a bad atmoshere in the yard at the momment and I dont think this is helping -hoping to move soon .

Hi, there have been loads of posts like this recently! Believe me you are not the only one who is feeling like this. As long as your horse has food, water and is warm then don't worry.
Just look forward to when this horrid, horrid winter is over and we can all start to enjoy our neds again

watch some competing or dressage vids on utube, or of someone you admire,
or make of plan of action of what you want to improve about you, the horse, or both

then you'll be dying to go out the next day...!!!

if you were in the situation where you couldn't ride everyday then how would that make you approach the work differently?

Yes, me too!
I keep mine at home and just cannot be bothered to ride.
I am happy doing everything else like poo picking, mucking out etc, it is just the riding I cannot be bothered with at the moment.
Horses dont seem too bothered about it though!

I have a break every year from the end of nov to the end of feb..... merlin does not mind the break and I dont feel guilty for not riding.

I hate the mud, cold and wet and he seems to love rolling in the mud.... so his loss really!!!

But I do go up everyday and feed, check rugs etc..... so not a bad owner

Accept that you dont enjoy it and stop feeling bad about it.... Buzz doesnt mind a break, I am sure

i had a very bad horse week last week, moved my horse and he really unsettled and unhappy this made me very unhappy he was so out of character i startd doubting if i should have him as i rely on yo to feed and turnout for me in morning and he kicked the guy really badly so not like him, i thought maybe unless i can do him at all times i shouldnt have him

anyhow he's much more settled and back to old self now so i'm ok again although similarly to you i just go up do the basics quickly and go home quick, just counting the days to lighter nights and better weather x

Im struggling at the moment, really dont want to ride in this weather and havent got the time with xmas and work at the moment. i have been feeling very guilty about not riding as much, so have decided not to ride until after xmas and give him a break. Now i feel less guilty and hopefully will feel more motivated when i start riding again.

i'm kinda the same so just riding weekends when i got more time.....have set a date in the new year to bring him into full work, clipped again, pull mane and tail etc then get going- have a full diary of events and lessons-cant wait, means pressure is off for now...how bout planning the new yr like i have?? its exciting!

Ive had a bit of a chill and not competed for a while and Ive really enjoyed it. I have just started riding every day and schooling again.

When I had ponies I sold everything within a week as I was fed up, and had 14 years off horses.

If you have had enough just sell up, you can always go back like I have when the time is right.

Really feel for everyone posting, it really is a hard time of the year, things will get better, hang on in there.

I am going to go against the grain here and say that i am loving riding my mare atm, can't get enough of her, i sit at work dreaming of going riding her, we are achieving so much and she is being brilliant.

I think this stems from have been brought back in to work in May after being on box rest for 9 months with a fractured pedal bone. I thought quite a few times that i would never ride her again so i am counting every blessing.

Having said that am not enjoying the rubbish weather.

oh god yeah...have thought about jacking it all in...but its not in me to do that..

I have a broken pony that I cant do anything with so she's just a very expensive pet atm....not that i mind not her fault she's broken....
I havent ridden properly on one of my own for months since merls really...and am dying to get back on with it...and to get mins all fixed and building her up again.

How about writing down what you would like to aim for next year with your goals....

Perhaps have a good sort out at yard...whilst pony is around and chitter chatter away to pony...others will think your mad but who cares....I do this all the time...seriously...

How about play about and plait up and take it out again?....practice if anything and your still having time with your pony.

I'm sure it will get better everyone's feeling a bit rubbish atm...winter blues are upon us....but think of spring/summer fun...

Chin up and you'll be fine....

I'm so pleased I'm not the only one. Yes it is a real struggle when the weather is like this. You can't be bothered to ride and just get the chores done as quickly as possible.

There is now way in hell I'm ever selling Buzz, i'm 25 years old so not some little kid, he was a 21st birthday present to myself and in the 4 years i've had him ive senior Bsja'd and jumped against some massive horses, we've been to Hickstead 3 times, Arena uk twice, qualified for the amatuer champs 2 years in a row, and qualified for the 2nd round BN and Disc every year, when i got him i'd lost my confidence and wouldnt jump a cross pole. So no i will not just 'SELL UP' as you put it, he's happy and healthy so has no need to go anywhere.

If it's freezing cold I do my jobs quickly and go home but otherwise, although my horse is on box rest for a leg injury, I'm still enjoying taking my time and spending time with her.
Now I can't ride I really want to! Especially after going to watch a SJ competiton I usually go to

Usually I'm not too bothered in winter but I'm lucky as have an indoor school.

Yep, and with the weather it looks like I wont ride till the weekend which isn't normal for me, it seems like we get 10 mins daylight in the day and then it's dark again, plus the continual drizzle/damp/rain shitty fields blahblah blah

I know the feeling. I popped up to the yard (horses on full livery), checked them all over then went home. T and H are more than happy to be left to their own devices but I really feel I should get my butt in gear and do something productive!!

It happens to a lot of people in winter, including myself a ew winters ago, what I do is make myself get into a routine - once I am on I dont care if its rianing/cold..x
