Hi

Just a little query really but has anyone else's horse not got on with Kevin Bacon stuff?

The big hairy had got stripy feet that can crack occasionally but never normally loses shoes. Anyway have been using Effol (sp?) for last six months with no problems, but having heard so much good stuff about Kevin Bacon I bought that instead. Been using it for about six weeks and in that time have lost a shoe, got more cracks than normal and clenches starting to come up in one place!! This may sound odd but it almost seems to have made his feet too soft?! Could just be coincidence I suppose but does seem odd.

Farrier is same one as had for years so nothing to do with shoeing.

Am going back to Effol but just wandered if anyone else's horses feet reacted same way? Know loads of people swear by it so it's probably just the big hairy being 'special' again :D

In my view I don't think it is what you are putting on the feet.

I have a pony with rock solid feet which will happily go 7 weeks between shoeings. Its only been 5 weeks since the last shoeing and we have had one lost shoe and an extra visit to replace some nails in others. He's never had so much as a slightly loose shoe before.

Due to the wonderful 'British Summer' that we are having the grass is currently growing like mad and this in turn is making the feet grow faster than usual. Therefore the nails and clenches are getting loosened quicker as the foot tries to grow against the shoe.

Echo Bounce - this summer's weather is playing havoc with my horses feet. I don't use any commerically available gloop, but make my own, using lard, vegetable oil and stockholm tar. I paint this on twice daily to maintain a level of moisture.

One of mine has awful feet, which break up at the drop of a hat, but the home made gloop is just about keeping us up and running at the moment.
