Cant fit it all in the title! So I noticed the other day when bathing my boy that he has lots of markings, some of which I knew about and some which surprised me. When dry you cant see them at all, he is just slightly dappled and going ever more fleabitten. When wet however you get:

The white socks (excuse his dodgey looking feet hes on holiday without shoes) -

Does anyone else own a grey with markings that you didn't realise they had? The star was a complete surprise to me as its the first time he has let water anywhere near his head and his passport doesn't mention it... a little worrying really :\.

My grey has white face markings and white legs down on her passport. I have only seen the white legs (pink skin) when bathing her but having spoken to her breeder she was iron grey when younger and the passport was done so I guess they showed then!

Will have to try and get her face wet and have a look!

Well when I bought my mare she was basically bay and CHAPS registered as she was coloured but now shes grey! She even had a white stripe down her face but now its all just blended in to her greyness! She also had a black mane and tail which is now grey too! I find little darker brown patches on her too :)

My 10 year old was born Bay and his passport's not been updated yet. He has a full white blaze up his face if you look closely! He too is flea bitten and I hope he's going to stay flea bitten and not go white!

I had a white grey pony (can't describe it any other way!) he had one white sock that you could only see when he was washed and the skin on his leg was white where everywhere else was dark skin.

All greys are born either black or chestnut. Some get registered as brown as foals too. White marking will show up for a while but all greys will fade to white with age and thus the markings will blend in. The blacks go through the iron grey, dapple, fleabitten then white stages. Chestnuts go to roan then dapple then flea bitten then white. Some go quicker than others. I have a 13yo TB who still has dapples whilst another at work was fleabitten by the time he was 8yo. I really hate flea bitten.

True blacks are born silver.

I have seen plenty of greys go through dapple then white and then flea bitten, My last TB was one as he aged he got more spots!

You are quite correct that greys are born a 'colour' and then grey out over time. It's also correct the the two coat base colours are black and chestnut, but you can have more than one modifying gene changing the base colour. So you could, for example, have a buckskin tobiano (black + agouti + cream + tobiano + grey) foal that greys out.

My grey (born chestnut) looked pink as a yearling due to the mixture of white and chestnut hairs. She was pure white as a two year old and then started to get chestnut fleabites at three. Luckily I'm pro fleabites. ;)

Her sire (also a chestnut/grey) went pink, then steel grey and is dapple grey at the moment.

My old mare was a rose grey with two white socks and a star when I bought her as a three year old. Totally white when she died at 28, but you could still see her markings when wet.

'Scuse the belly, this was taken shortly before she died as a pensioner.:)

yes my dapple grey (slowly turning flea bitten!) has a hidden star too! Only seen it once when fully clipped out and wet!

My stallion who has just turned 6 has a black mane, black legs and little 'socks'. He also has a dorsal stripe as you can see...
Taken yesterday while out on a hack with my husband:

I got mine at 2 when she was such dark grey she was commonly mistaken for black at a distance or in pics. She has one short white sock, 3 very narrow coronet bands, white blaze & a few white spots the size of a penny on her back. She has greyed out but incredibly slowly, wasn't really dappled till in her early teens. Now 23 & fleabitten. But the flecks are still very dark & quite a lot of them, think we're a good few years away from grey yet, even though legs & face blended in. And even where she isn't flecked, the hair is a combination of white & very light grey, so next to a fleabitten she appears darker. Plus a few scars that blended in as dapples when she was dark.

Yes, two greys. One is pure white now, but her passport drawing shows lots of white markings and says she is a blue roan, which she clearly wasnt. The other is young and is still dark steel grey so I can see his markings still, but eventually he will lose them.
