Hi just wondering if anyone else is still trying to get their mare in foal or has everyone else given up for this year? MY mare has had a few problems,to cut a very long story short she conceived first time last year and was due end of may, end of may came and went and after 3 weeks i had the vet examine her. there was no foal, she had lost it between her october scan and the summer but carried on with a full blown phamtom pregnancy. The day after i found out i took her back to stud to try again, They had bother getting her in season as she still thought she was pregnant so ended up being jagged. She was covered and was scanned on fri but the embryo was abnormal, it was small and funny shape so she was re scanned today and she'd lost it (maybe for best to lose at this stage if not right) so thats us back to beginning. I've decided we will try once more and if unsuccessfull will bring her home and decide over winter what i want to do. I'm feeling a bit sorry for my mare right now. So like the title says is anyone else still trying?

Hiya, i know exactly how you feel as my mare did exactly the same....full blown phantom pregnancy which was only discovered three weeks after her 'due' date. In fact when i read you post i had to do a double take as i thought someone had cut and pasted one of my old posts! :)

My mare also went back to stud and after two coverings was not in foal..... the third time she has taken and touch wood, it was still there on the heartbeat scan. I still cant decide if i'm happy about it or not, but am picking her up tomorrow..... so who knows!

Dont give up, even though it is disheartening!

yes, trying right now. only made decision for her to go to stud a few weeks ago, then vet forgot to tell lab to do EHV bloods so extra delay, took her to stud and she'd just ovulated, argh, PG'd last week, she put up 2 follicles but they were full of blood (can't remember what that's called) so they didn't risk using the frozen semen as apparently follicles like that aren't often fertile, so she's got 3 more days and then PG'd again i think.
i'm just keeping fingers crossed and praying she takes this year, i don't mind a late foal at all but i really only want the mare to have 18 months off from now ideally, and miss 1 season not 2. but, what will be will be.
v best of luck with your girl!

Yes!!!

My tb mare's seasons went all to pot after she was stabled next to my other mare that foaled. She became incredibly broody then refused to cycle.

She was scanned and all was well inside, she was then jagged and came into season. She was covered and then sanned not in foal. She then didn't show in season again so was put on a course of regumate to get everything back to normal. She is showing in season this afternoon so will be seeing the stalion tomorrow. This will be our last attempt for this year.

This is the same mare that was covered last year and was scanned in foal. Had her heartbeat scan and all was well. Had her re-scanned in oct and it had gone.

Really need to have her in foal this year.

Yep. Two failed AI attempts, now at stud. Scan next Monday for a blob. She's not coming back until she's pregers! Nothing wrong with her, the AI attempts failed because of no semen motility, but I only asked for it to be tested after the second attempt. Lesson learned.

Good luck with yours

I have given up on one, for two reasons. She was a late August foal as a result of an accidental covering and her mother had a difficult foaling.

My paddocks are burnt to a crisp and we have had hardly a drop of rain for five weeks, this followed on from scorching days in May and June. So I want early foals and have two due late Feb.

I understand it is different in the UK but I do think spring grass is good for growing younstock.

Yep, mare not been cycling properly was due to be AI'd last month as a last minute decision, but she wasnt having any of it so shes been on regumate, think today should finish it off and hoping to catch her this month. Keep everything crossed for me as i'm excited about the prospect of a Billy Congo baby for next year.

Yes, my mare in on her last chance and she is being scanned tomorrow so fingers crossed. We even changed stallions from the beautiful TB I had chosen to an equally beautiful RID that the guy at the stud has just aquired from Ireland.. I am hoping that she just doesn't like the change of nationality and this time will be a success

She has always been to full RID's before and taken first time every time but the year I really want her to take (lost her son in Feb) she just isn't playing ball!!
I have everything crossed for tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath as my PMA has well and truly gone out the window!
Good luck to all of you still trying!

I'm feeling a bit more positive now that i know i'm not the only one still hanging on in there. When she comes into season this will be our last attempt for this year as i don't mind a late foal a s opposed to no foal but i think if we carried on after this attempt it really is getting a bit too late and i'd rather wait and send her back in march and have the whole of next summer to try.
Good luck to everyone who is also still trying, lets hope this is our lucky month.

Just had a foal on Sunday with a mare that was running with a stallion and another due any time now, so in the natural world there is no calendar apparently.
I can't say the foal has missed any great weather, but obviously the lack of spring grass is a consideration but with the right feeding and management I can see no reason why a foal should not be born at any time of year.
Obviously if you are a breeding to show or a particular discipline where age versus size is important then that factor has to be considered
