I've just bought a bag for my good doer who usually has hi-fi lite. It's just a token offering to feed his supplement in, really, as he's kept enough weight over the winter just on hay, a tiny bit of chaff and literally a handful of high fibre pellets. I just wondered what people's thoughts were?

It's great for laminitics but not ideal for fatties as the molasses are replaced by oil which ia more fattening. A handful won't hurt but the hi fi lite has less calories

Ah, true, thank you.

The oil might be handy just now as I'd dropped him down to a low 3 on a condition score ready for spring grass and now we're having this prolonged winter :-(

He is always a perfect 3 on a condition score as I restrict grazing to prevent weight gain, so he comes in at around 390kg all year round (14hh welsh).

So it seems a tricky trade off between oil or sugar. I think because I feed so little I can get away with either and probably the oil is the better option as he did have laminitis prior to me owning him. Also he has a little muscle wastage to rebuild, having had his back treated. This chaff is 10% protein - how far does this support muscle development?

I've bought it for the newly acquired good-doer; only had him a week so can't really comment. He just gets a double handful split between two feeds to get supplements. To me the oil is the lesser 'evil' compared to molasses so that's why I chose it over the lite version.

I use it on my spanish cant take any sugar so it suits him and my good doer cob is on it. I do use a balancer with it as dont feed required amounts seem ok on it so far

I've just bought the Alfa A version too instead of AA oil I was that impressed by the consistency of the Hi-fi version.

Just glanced in here and found this post - I actually bought some last week by accident  I went into the feed shop - well ice-house, was talking about buying the Alfa unmolassed, asked for the Alpha unmolassed (as a substitute for Simple Systems which I normally feed), she put it in the boot of the car, said it's new etc. etc. I got the rest of my stuff, got home, took it to feed bin, ripped it open, put it in buckets, thought, 'it's not very green' made up the rest of the feeds and they ate it. Next day I looked at the bag in real daylight and found I'd got the wrong one, nothing I could do about it but was a bit annoyed because in this weather I am trying to keep the calories up not less! What are the pellets made of and why are they in chaff?

I'd like to know what the pellets are. On the ingredients they're just given some abbreviated name; it doesn't really mean anything to me!

If that photo is of the horse you are feeding it looks as if it's doing a good job!
I might ring them tomorrow and see if I can blag a voucher from them and find out what the pellets are made of/from.

Mine doesn't like it, interesting its got more calories than hifi lite. I think I'll just go back o hifi lite although I really didn't want to feed molasses!

Yes, that's him, thank you :-). An old photo, but he's kept consistently at that weight.

If you are feeding only a handful, then the protein level will do nothing to rebuild his muscle. The percentages are only if fed at the recommended amounts.

Yes, true, yet if I were to feed he recommended rate he'd gain fat. At least, he would with the amount of work I can give him, which is just a few hours hacking a week.

Both my cobs and my warmbloods seem to enjoy it and means I can give the smaller ponies a tiny handful as a "pretend" dinner. My warmblood filly has grown up nice on it this winter (with only a balancer ... perhaps she's a good doer which is great because her mother was a skinny stresser!)

if you mean the nis pellets they are nutritionally improved straw. A chemical process that means more nutrients are available and digested that plain straw. You see them in alot of lo cal feeds now.

Thank you - mystery solved :-)
Wish they could speak in plain English on the bag, though.
