my pony is really vocal, he whinnies to me when i arrive on the yard even if he hasnt seen me and again if i dont go to him right away. he snorts and squeals when he is being impatient, squeals when i turn him out, whinnies at me when i arrive to get him in and again if im not quick enough. i swear he is the noisiest horse i know...any of you have a noisy/vocal horse?

My old pony was exactly the same, I used to shout of him as I drove past his field and he would squeal and trot up to the gate. He would whinny when I went on the yard, then every time he lost sight of me he would whinny when I reappeared. He would also whinny when out hacking and at shows haha. I miss him loads
Just adding, he had the most high pitched girly whinny ever. People couldn't believe it came from him :)

Yep, Ben is very vocal, I get a proper welcome off him and if I respond, he answers back! Sometimes when we are off on a hack he gets really vocal, it's quite funny because he is so active he flings his head up and down in an exuberant nodding so he feels really lame and whinneys and whinneys into thin air, acting with utter confusion and shock whenever he is answered. Last year he was whinnying away, as we rode up to a bridle path the couple who owned the house on the corner were stood in their garden with the drive gate closed, we had a right laugh, they had come running out to close the gate so he didn't run in over their lawn, he made such a racket they thought there was a loose horse running down the road!!!!

my boy gives me very vocal greetings whenever I appear, they're the most pathetic whinnies though, very high and soft. And whenever I compete my mums pony in the collecting ring he sort of chuckles at every single horse that passes him, it's seriously funny!

My arab is quite vocal to me, have had him just about a year and have never known him to be quite so noisy! He calls when he sees me walk past the field, and if he is in on his own and I walk out of his sight he screeches for me... think it's more to do with him moving house, new herd, completely different way of life for him and trying to get him more used to being on his own for periods of time. He is so much better than he was at first, but I feel he is a bit clingy with me, hence screaming for me when he can't see me lol daft horse

I had one that had this really high pitched neigh, she seemed to do it all the time. It drove me nuts. Like nails down a blackboard. I normally like the sound a horse makes, but this one was different. Probably one of the reasons why I got rid of her!

Kyra grumbles when i arrive, other than that i dont really get a greeting, except for last night. I had to cover loads of shifts one after the other so didnt get up to the yard until 11:30 pm, i needed a wee and was hungry so i just adjusted her rug and checked her over and decied not to give her her token handful of chaff, i turned to leave the yard and got 6 steps before she turned whilst rearing, trotted up to me and made the most shocked/angry sound ive ever heard! I could literally hear her saying 'where do you think you're going?!?'

my mare is very noisy- because she always wants food! she actually spots my car and calls out to me from a distance- eyes like a hawk, trying to get me to hurry up! my boy is very vocal to other horses. he hacks out fine on his own, but will call out on his return :) saying hi to his ladies!

I'm told mine's quite vocal, it just seems normal to me :o

He has a range of whinnies. The usual one is when I arrive at the field in the morning, and it's just a greeting one. He also has a "Is that by any chance a bucket of feed?" whinny, and as you approach the field with the same bucket of feed, you will usually get lots of deep chuckling.

He has a really cute "oh there you are" whinny, just a little short one, that he does if I am in the field with him, go out of sight for a while then reappear. He also does this to herd mates if they're not waiting for him at the gate when he returns from hacking - he'll walk to the top of the hill where he can see them and do his little "there you are" whinny.

He has a quite distinctive "I'm in trouble" whinny. Usually if I arrive at field and he's hurt himself. So he can see me but can't get to me for some reason. I never like hearing that one.

Not one for whinnying while out - he did do this a little as a young horse, but as he got older and more secure in himself, he stopped feeling the need to constantly shout "ARE THERE ANY HORSES HERE, I AM ALL ALONE APART FROM THIS HUMAN!" :D

Mine 'woofles' to greet me and when she wants fuss.

She also shouts endlessly when she runs out of hay, and asks to go out into the school for a wee! She doesn't like weeing on her bed if I'm there to take her out. Odd thing.

Yep, one of mine is a total chatterbox. I suspect it's partly that she's a bit bored. She retired at 8 and has never really approved of it. I've had her since she was 2 and she wasn't quite so vocal before that. She's also worse when I'm around, I gather, constantly talking to me when I go in and out of the barn or deal with the others. Fortunately she has quite a nice neigh and a sweet little whicker, so it's not too annoying!

Yes! We call Kali "chatty man" because he is soooo vocal. He calls to me when he hears my car arrive on the yard in the morning, when he sees me, when one of the girls who share thw barn with him are brought in or turned out, when he is first turned out, when he sees me arrive on the yard to bring him in, when he sees the lorry arrive, when he is in the washroom, and most bizarrely when we are about a quarter of a mile from either a venue (even if he has never been there before) or from home.

P

I have two that are chatty. The rest of the yard all admit that my gelding would never let himself be forgotten about, cos he yells hopefully at anyone passing his box especially first thing in the morning..
The wee mare has the deepest whinny I have ever heard, all the more funny cos she is 11hh and she chats a lot too, it's just soooo deep for a wee thing like her. Best ones are when she is turned out and has he head in the water trough and we get this deep echoey grumble. I swear she does it cos she likes the sound. She will also do it with her head in her feed bucket, again I think she likes the sound it makes lol.

My Appy goes mad when I ride my ISH. They are inseparable and he is very loud and shouts a lot when they are seperated for any amount of time. He isn't that stressed, just sounds it! Also, he calls when he sees me, squeals with other horses and snorts when he is unsure of something. He makes all sorts of strange noise, e.g half whinnies etc. Glad he's not the only one! :p

I've got quite a chatty wee mare. First time I rode her she turned herself full head on and let off 3 enormous whinnies out to sea! She was very green on her own and the first few months I had her she would sometimes call to cows and even on one occasion, a man on the track ahead of us... funny little thing.

It's got less as she's got older but now she's developed a lovely little 'surprise' whinny that pops out after a snort, seems to catch her off-guard hehe!

My Luna is extremely talkative, in fact I always say we can have a full conversation lol

She neighs when I arrive and nickers whenever I talk to her. If I move from her stable she neighs when I come back in sight and nickers when I look over her door.

Going to catch her is like a scene from black beauty, as she spots you, tosses her head and gallops up the field neighing her head off! Haha! I'm sure it's only because I feed her but it still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling :)

I wish mine were chatty. I think in the last 13 years, I have probably only had one whinny off him, and maybe a couple of nickers. He's a very manly chap, so obviously doesn't feel the need to be vocal, however, he does watch me all the time - can be odd knowing you have eyes on you all the time.

My horse Sol is terribly chatty and has a range of different calls and nickers depending on what he wants. On Sunday I went for a long ride and then put him in his stable. He was expecting to go out in his field straight afterwards but instead because of the weather and other reasons he and his mates who had a couple of hours out were having a rare afternoon in. So whilst I was round the back filling up his hay soaking bucket I could him indignantly neighing in a high-pitched way. Then when I walked back round he was doing strong but low-pitched nickering as I walked back and forth across the yard as though he was asking me what the hell was going on and why was he staying in. He even persuaded me he needed a little light lunch to compensate for not going out :o Once he saw me getting the others in he settled.

He also greets all arrivals on the yard horse or human and is generally a nosy parker that has to know what is going on.

Our new boy is very vocal. Calls to anyone he thinks who may be about to feed him, or could possibly bring him in from the field for his dinner. We keep him at home and my husband quickly decreed that he can be turned out in any field as long as its not the one nearest to the house, to avoid being constantly whinnied at to bring carrots out!

Yup :D

Calls to me when spotted, even if I am in the car.
Calls while walking up to him.
Calls if food is spotted.
Calls to check someone is there.
Calls to check the judge is awake.
Calls to check the timer is ready.
Calls to tell me he's found a poo.
Calls to tell me he's done a poo.
Would probably have a conversation with the Master, the hounds or anyone that'd listen once we get round to hunting.
Yells to say he's lost me.
Cries if he's noticed his on his own.

Yes, he shouts his face off when he sees/hears me and even if I'm round the other side of the yard, he has hearing like a bat and shouts for me! Hilarious! He's naughty and kicks the door very violently if I'm in sight and ignoring him. Funny little sossidge, he'll stand quietly for half an hour while I muck out and do chores, but if I'm chatting, he wants my attention :rolleyes3:

Really made me laugh :)
