Only managing to get tatty last bales round my way - all the farmers I have spoken to cant cut yet due to the weather and they are doubtfull about the crop that they end up with.

I only needed a few bales until my order of haylage was cut but that hasent happened yet! It's not so bad for us one horse owners but is anyone else a bit worried? I wonder what it is going to do to the cost. Currently it's anything from £2.50 -£3.50 per small bale for old hay where I am.

Ours is still too wet to cut unfortunately.

It still looks ok but we are more concerned at he mo because we needed to be in that back field by now as the front field needs resting, yet still has 10 horses on it and little grass.

Bloody rain!

Some fields around here look like someone has gone over them with a roller!

There is still hay to be had here but you need to go further afield and buy the big rounds now. Locally small bale hay is anywhere between £2 and £3.80 depending on the supplier.

Im lucky that one of mine can have haylage but the oldie must have good meadow type hay so I suspect, unless the weather changes dramatically over the next 24 hours, that hay is going to be plentiful but a bit woody when its eventually cut.

There's an old saying - two moons in May, no straw or hay - and guess what, there were two full moons in may...

Hopefully the weather will dry out before winter!

I am lucky, as my OH is a farmer and we still a few ton of hay left over from last year as it was such a good crop, even though it's old hay it is still excellent quality.

A little worried about straw though, hope this wet spell ends soon!

Yep - I spoke to my supplier the other day and he only has 600 bales left and all the other local suppliers have none.

I'm paying £4.00 a bale and am collecting as many as I can get in the lorry tomorrow!!!

Yes it is a worry and I only have one to feed! I am onto plan f now and thinking if I can get a round bale put in my trailer it will see me a while longer...if there are round bales! Other than that I will have to travel with my trailer elsewhere and stock up as best I can.

Hiya

Yes I am having serious problems here too. Everywhere has sold outn of hay and straw, so I've had to move all mine onto shavings. The hay we have got is not good quality and they are only selling 6 bales at a time -when you have 4 to feed like me that's a drop in the ocean!! My mare has just returned from stud so I want her on the best stuff, unfortunately that means buying the horsehage bags at £6 a pop, one bag lasts her two days if I'm stingy with it!

I am going to swap over to large bale haylage for this coming year, the ones that can be stored outside in their wrapping. It's such a worry at the moment and I can see this time next year being the same! I'm going to buy in bulk ASAP and stock up for next years.....

PS I'm paying £3 a bale for poor quality hay, grrrr!!

Wow, we're paying €25 (£17) for huge round bales of beautifully made meadow - delivered!

I think there will be a shortage around here, no one has even done a first cut yet, apart from one super-prepared farm. I'm not too bothered, if there's no hay he'll just have to live out (there should be enough grass over winter), or the YO will have to get hunting for some.

Very very worried,

my OH is an agricultural contractor so we need it cut and soon so A i can feed the neddies all winter and B We dont go bancrupt as we spent 45 grand on a baler and wrapper this year and its not getting used. So lets all pray for dry weather ,
